der Kampflieger Grumman F3F
Having bought Roman's kit, the first one I built was an F3F painted in the last scheme these aircraft wore while in service; the early "warpaint" of blue-gray over gray. Used as fighter-trainers, there were still a few F3F's in the Navy during the first months of WW2. I have a picture in a book of this one serving at NAS North Island in California.
The build was straight forward, except for the wheel wells, which are tricky. I also learned that you need to cut the bulkheads down until the black line is almost gone for the best fit, and at 1/48, make them thick for overlapping skin sections. The kit features a full cockpit, but since I was going to glue the opaque canopy shut, I didn't bother with it. I built this model to send to Chris for his sale up in Wisconsin. The pictures aren't the best, but hopefully they demonstrate that this is another great der Kampflieger design! Wyvern |

That looks awesome!!!
Yeah, I know what you mean about the wheel wells...I had to take a few minutes of just looking at it to build a 3D picture in my mind of how they would go together and then how to get them in the space alloted. It should be interesting. With the formers I make them in two sizes. For the wings I just use some stiff thin stock, but you are right on. For the fuselage formers thicker is better. I cut those on the line and dry fit...sand down...dry fit...sand down. Again, a great build. Thanks for sharing. Jeff |
