Pylon!
I picked up a new book yesterday at the air museum's gift shop. It's called "Pylon! 1931-1934: The Omaha Air Races". It is written by Wallace Peterson, who is originally from Omaha, and now lives in Lincoln, NE. Basically, it's a story about the Depression era air races held in Omaha, and how they affected his life. The first 5 pages are pretty good so far :p Lots of pictures of the old racers and their planes. Many that are pictured are in the FG racers collection too. It's a pretty interesting topic to me, since I live in Omaha now. Also, the race course went by where I currently work! I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this book. I'll let you know how it ends :D

A great find, Willy! I'd love to read this book. The air races and air racers of the 1920s and 30s are fascinating.
Of of the lesser-known novels of William Faulkner was also called "Pylon." It's about barn-stormers and was made into a film called "The Tarnished Angels," which Jim Reuter and I saw in 1958. A number of aircraft of the period were shown in the film. I've been looking for it for years, but apparently it has not yet been made into a DVD. Faulkner (who trained as an RFC pilot in WWI) also wrote a short story called "Turnabout," which deals with WWI bombers and Royal Navy torpedo boats, and another flying novel, "A Fable." Don |

Okay. So, I managed to read almost half of the book (it's only 80 pages long) last night. There is so much info about the pilots it's scary. I know more about the racers now after an hour of reading than I did in my whole life before. It's amazing the research that went into this book, I know for a fact that you would like this one Boosed. The book really brings the races to life. I can't wait to finish it in the next day or two.

Finished the book up last night. What a good read. I learned so much about the various racers and their planes it's insane. Now I really want to buy and build all of the FG racers collection, as most of the planes were detailed in the book. :D It's good to know that good 'ole Omaha had an important place in the history of aviation.

Unfortunately, the book is now out of print and I am on the lookout for a new or used copy.
What was the name of the museum where you bought yours, willy? Don |

Don,
If you want, I can send you a copy. The museum I work at has probably 20 copies or so. I think the price was reduced to $7 too :D |

Willy -- PM on the way.
Yu -- Very nice racers. The only FG racer that I have built is the Laird-Turner Meteor. I don't have a stand-alone photo, but here is a snaphot of the model taken when I was building my Maly HP Hampden during the Old Troll contest earlier this year. Don |
