Steam engine animations

Ever wonder how a grasshopper beam engine works? Here's a site with animated line drawings for many types of steam engines:

Animated Engines

Cheers,

One of the animations is of a Gnome rotary engine, so now we know what's going on inside Leif's Sopwith Camel engine.

Thanks for this useful and intriguing site, Oliver.

Neat Site

Hi Oliver,

That's a neat site. I like simple, base line explanations like this.

Excellent! First time I'm even close to beginning to understand the workings of one of these rotary engines. What surprised me most is that there really is one fixed point - which is OFF CENTER of rotation. Must have been mounted to the backside. Got to remember this somehow. - L.

Note that there is one fixed point off-center of the axis of rotation. Never would have guessed that was the way it worked. Must have been mounted on the fixed back-plate.

That is the offset of the crankshaft. Remember the crankshaft was fixed and the engine went round it.

I see my quote is from the other thread - hey ho.
