The Adventures of Ottokar Prohaska

MichaelS's new thread on an upcoming build beginning with an image of a model base consisting of a map of the United States (Coming soon.....) raised a speculation about flat earth theories.

In case anyone would like an explication of how it is possible accurately to navigate if you believe the earth is flat, I recommend John Biggins, The Emperor's Colored Coat (New York: St Martin's Press, 2006).

It is the second of Biggins's tales of the adventures of Ottokar Prohaska, a Czech submarine officer, naval aviator, and adventurer in the early 20th century and during World War I. The story involves Prohaska's pre-war flight training (ending up with a forced landing in the middle of the Crown Prince's garden party), the Balkan intrigues that led to the war, and a voyage aboard a ship whose captain believes the earth is flat.

Peter Ansoff, the Grand Master of the International Paper Modelers' Convention (and a former submarine officer himself) put me on to these wonderful books. If you are a fan of Sir Harry Flashman, Brigadier Gerard, Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, and The Radetsky March, don't miss this series:

A Sailor of Austria (1991)
The Emperor's Coloured Coat (1992)
The Two-Headed Eagle (1993)
Tomorrow The World (1994)

Unless it's sarcasm in the books, why waste time on nutcases?

Not sarcasm. Humor.

And some very clever navigational mathematics, as well as the inspired development of a demented character by a skilled author.

Oh Yes!!! The Biggins Tales!!! When I had my consulting business my business partner was an Austrian who had emigrated to the US. He turned me onto these books.

There is also a whole series of Anime type figures, aircraft, etc. that have sprouted from these

Mea Culpa (Italian for "I F***ed Up) to our group historian Don B. His "explication" is in fact a real word. I assumed that he was going for "explanation"

Well, here’s an odd coincidence. I read “the emperor’s coloured coat’ at Incirlik, Turkey, some time in 1992. I found the book in the AFB library, while serving there on Op Haven ( Provide Comfort 1 to US forces.) Great book and some good times!

The Prohaska novels are outstanding; they satisfy on every level and have an amazing amount of detail and historical commentary. I wish there were more than 4, but each of them is a true gem.
