Thinking of moving to U.K.
I have a question for the members in England and the U.K (I've never been sure if they're the same place or different).
I've been thinking of moving across the pond to be closer to my girlfriend who lives in Romania. I can't really move to Romania directly because a) I don't speak any Romanian, and 2) I hear the job situation over there is pretty bad. So, I thought about moving to London, or a city in that area, because I've heard travelling to Romania is a lot easier from there than from the U.S. What I wanna know is what it takes to move there, what the job situation looks like, and where the best place to get a job is. Thanks for anybody who can help |

It would help to know your educational background and what kinds of work you are qualified to do.
The British Embassy can tell you about the requirements for moving to England. See: Our locations The British Consulate-General in Chicago covers your region. what line of work are you in? some jobs always travel well.
lots of eastern europeans and community in the UK, maybe there's a possibility of temporarily moving to the uk and seeing how it would go? difficult to say for two non nationals. don't discount manchester or birmingham to live if they have established airlines/routes serving romania. seems a big step when you can fly from the states, but distance can be difficult i guess.

Best stick to the home counties. Tim |

do you have any critters? Bringing them into the UK is tough on them due to the long quarantines....

I was down in London over the weekend with my good lady (from the 'grim' North), and it's true the streets were paved with gold

Speaking as a Londoner who has lived and worked in the Midlands (25 miles north of Birmingham, for 45 years) I would definitely say that this IS the best area to settle in. We have a main airport which serves everywhere and all major motorways pass through so it's easy to get anywhere from the Midlands. The other big factor in it's favour is house and apartment costs which are a lot lower than the prices in the south. It also has large industrial areas where work can be found. .....
.........and it also has several paper modelers all pretty close by, so what better reason can there be than to settle here in the Midlands (oh yes, and the coffee's always on if you're close by>smile<)

Dunno, when your family landed in the States, but you might have a chance at an Irish Passport if your grandfather or mother was born there (this is a guess going on your forum name), this would make moving to the EU a lot simpler as you would be a returning national.

Dad traced us back to a Castle Finn (Fyn?) in Ireland back in the 1700's. That's as close as I get.
I dunno if my skillset is transferrable. Driving (CDL)/ Customer service /Fast food. I am willing to work in a factory though. The reason I'm thinking of moving to the UK is that a trip to Romania from the US runs about $5000 a pop, and that's just flight and hotel for a week. That's a once in a lifetime trip for me. I hear it's only only a few hundred pounds to travel from England. And I wouldn't need a visa or passport. |
