Acrobat Problem
The new Adobe Acrobat Reader installs Macaffee antivirus without any kind of opt out feature.
Definitely a drive by install. Adobe Forums: Why is Adobe installing McAfee software... At this time. I highly recommend anything else. It's obvious that Adobe is incapable of fixing problems with their software (see backdoor security hole) so they are letting someone else do their work for them. Not the proper way to do it. |

they sure had a strange layout to the page and to opt out of getting McaFspam you had to unclick it before pressing the download with is over the left hand side of the page with the mention of the opt out of macfspam on the right. Usaully the adobe page had the mention of mcafee on the left and just above the download now they have changed the location bold adobe very bold.

I am still sticking with what I got in CS5. I use Norton to scan the files and block traffic. I have not gotten hit but I can't stand Mac-a-Fee. I think I am going to give Open Office a try on my new computer. I don't know anyone who has tried it yet, though it seems a lot of people use it and Foxit reader.

My Acrobat Reader is set to update itself, which it just did without Macaffee.

Thanks for the heads-up on that, don't like Macaffee.
Zathros, I've got Open Office but haven't really used it enought to make any real comments about it...other then the more open source programs I can find with using less Adobe and Microsoft the happier I am. |

Just confirmed, my Reader auto-updated and no additional software installed for me.
However, I already use McAfee Internet suite as my main firewall, virus scanner and email protection software. No problems on this end. |

Well ... I was greeted Monday after class with a message on my monitor of 'hard disk not found'.
For some reason my hard drive is overheating and shutting down. I had to purchase a terabyte drive to replace the ailing 500 gig drive. The downside of all of this is that I am having a hell of a time recovering data. I have it in an external caddy with a large fan on it full speed. While it's in the caddy, I am pulling the data off of it. I have lost all of my bookmarks so there goes about 10 years of surfing. I have emails too that will not be recovered. I also have passwords that I may not recover. Right now I am currently shunting 400+ gigs of my life one file at a time over to this new drive. I had to install software on the new drive and this new technology doesnt like XP. |

SteveO, before you give up on that drive, put it in the fridge overnight, then stick it back into yuor computer, changing the jumpers to slave, make sure your BIOS sees it. You may be able to access it for a while before it overheats and get data off of it. This works on many hard drives that overheat. You'd be surprized how many times you can do this. You could even freeze it for a while. Put it in a wrapped in a paper towel, in a plastic bag if you freeze it, gets rid of any excess moisture. If is a Laptop, there is another method, you will have to get a kit to convert it to USB, not expensive at all. If I can offer you any assistance let me know. I build computers for friends.

Thanks Zathros. I just finished up with getting everything off of it that was vital.
Now I am stuck with this new drive and I am unsure how it's working out because it's using the new standard for drive technology with 4kb clusters. I don't think WinXP 32 bit likes this. |

I use Open Office and Foxit reader.
Both of them work very well for me. My simple pill box and dragon teeth in the download section were designed using Open Office Draw. See: PaperModelers.com - Downloads - Small Pillboxes & Dragon's Teeth - 1/72 |
