I preffer thumbnails. This way I click only on those that interest me, thread opens faster and it looks neater.
One thing, though - when I click on the thumbnail, I would liek to see picture at least 480pix vertical. 280 is way too small....

Does that mean that this is how the attached pictures are handled? If so, that is a disadvantage. I always like to shoot for 640x480 (or some crop near that). If this is so, external hosting would seem to have the edge, plus it does not tax this site's bandwidth.

I'm fortunate to have a broadband connection as well so I'd prefer seeing full pics right away.

However, if that means s.............l............o.............w........ ..e...........r loading for those that have to make do with a modem, I wouldn't want to hinder their enjoyment of the forum as well.

It would be great if you found some method of making it optional.

Ignore this. I was trying some tests but imageshack seems to be broken and I can't seem to delete my own messages!

I also prefer thumbnails, not because I am on dial-up or anything, but I absolutely hate it when a photo causes my puny little monitor screen to stretch past my stated 1024x768 set resolution.

However, since I also have really puny, and terribly bad, eyes, I wouldn't mind the thumbnail size be increased to two times or so what it is now. It would make seeing if the image is really worth looking at a bit easier...at least for me.

So what size would be the maximum width for the average user? I prefer to see the whole image, but I am as guilty as any for loading oversize pics!

I should have put in a disclainer at the beginning. As for full size pics, I'm assuming that folks post the generally recommended 800x600 or 640x480 or so. The side scrolling is an annoyance, but I would ignore that for the purposes of this discussion.

I've been using 640x480 pics in my build thread, and trying to keep each image around 50kb.
No shameless plug here, but you can go see how it works out.

Edit:
Err, it seems I use 800x600 on the first page, and 640x480 on the second page.

That 800x600 seem to be about right for me.

I much prefer thumbnails, mainly due to my dialup. There were a number of threads on that "other" group that I never got to see pix on, because there are so many and they're so big. Also, again, due to dialup, I'd like to be able to choose the particular ones I want to see full size. I do like Carl's suggestion about viewer's choice, I hope it's possible.
