Post Today 100 years ago..

on May 31st a century ago the RMS Titanic, in her days the largest ship ever built, was launched at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast. Just before 12.15 pm, a rocket was fired and one minute later the triggers were released and the 24 360 ton hull of the Titanic would slip into the water. The whole event took 62 seconds.

May 31st is also the centennial for the delivery of RMS Olympic from H&W to the White Star Line.

At 4.30 p.m.Captain Edward J. Smith took the helm and steered the Olympic through Belfast Lough (accompanied by the Nomadic and the Traffic, two passenger tenders constructed to aid the new liners) on to Liverpool.

Olympic only stayed in Liverpool for a day before heading to Southampton. She arrived on June 3rd and immediately work began to prepare her for her maiden voyage. Vast quantities of food, linen, coal and china etc were carefully loaded aboard.

I know, the slipways for Titanic and Olympic were specially made, by combining three slipways into two.

And then the fun and games begun...... pity there wasn't a happy ending to follow such a huge undertaking by the designers and work force. Indeed, the loss of lives is sad and very tragic, but the losses encountered from work gangs while she was being built is sometimes over looked.

So many of the men who worked on Titanic as workforce died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. I think we should always remember them men who met the lord that awful first day of the Battle of the Somme.

1:100 Scale 'RMS Titanic' Model by Oscar Pinzon

Hey, Jerry,

Have you seen this 1:100 scale Titanic model by modeler Oscar E. Pinzóm (in Bogota, Colombia) over at TRMA?:
TITANIC FORUM - Oscar Pinzon, Titanic 1/100 (Phase 1)

Complete with internal electric lighting (in separate aluminium foil boxes) and realistic cardboard hull plating. Amazing, isn't it? Check out the Verandah Cafe!

Absolutely mindblowing.

RE: NOMADIC accompanying the OLYMPIC and TITANIC

To whom it may concern:
The Paper Shipwright David Hathaway is working on a 1:250 model of this "commuter" ship to the White Star Liners off Cherbourg (now being preserved as a museum ship at Belfast). It will be worthwile looking for this one, too.

Kind regards -
Papercaptain
