" ART " ...I don't get it?
This painting is by famed Spanish Artist Joan Miro.
It was painted in 1927 It is called "Blue Star" It is considerd, by Miro himself, to be the "key work of his output". Recently (at auction in 2007) it sold for a record 11.6 million Euros (US $16.7 million) in Paris. ...this is just stupid. " ART " ...I don't get it?

You guys are just missing the point - are you all blind as to what the artist is trying to show in this masterpiece ? The blue star blobby thing is showing the way for the red blood blobby thing on the squiggly line. The juxtaposition of the two splodges align with the bit that looks like chewing gum to make your eyes move along the line of lines that line up with the squiggly bit.... i thought it was obvious - and who ever paid that small price for such a beautiful piece of work got a bargain. The closest i ever came to owning something like this, i was too late, someone had mistaken it for a chip wrapper and threw it in the bin.

The "stupid" comment, is of course, my own personal opinion.
More than anything it reflects my frustration as a struggling "artist". But I'm sorry, you can't tell me that that is "art"? First of all, I have an issue if you have to supply a 1000 word description explaining the artist's thought processes and underlying metaphors ...then I think I'll just have a BLT on Brown Toast and lets call it "Nagasaki". ... I used to have an editorial on my web site, called "Art...I don't get it." I ranted about my general feelings of "modern" art and bitched about the ridiculous prices paid for this stuff. I used as a simple comparison two artworks by modern Russian artists. the first, a beautiful landscape oil painting by an artist named Prohorov. His works, like this, sell for about $180. I think its gorgeous, and I would be proud to own it. And then theres this stuff, by the "renowned" abstract artist Rothko. Individual paintings in this "colour" series sell for $800,000 and up. Recently, a three colour mess called “White Center (Yellow, Pink and Lavender on Rose).” set a world record selling for $72.8 Million. yes...I said that correctly...72.8 MILLION DOLLARS! I've seen socks darned with more artistic beauty. And for better reason. But thats just my redneck opinion.

Personally I like the appeal of the whole "but what IS it?" thing, it's kind of interesting.
Landscapes and things everybody knows about though I definitely do like those too. I like art to be a bit abstract but I most certainly don't see the reason for the price difference. Since I haven't hung up anything on my walls yet I've been sort of thinking about some art to get. I think I'm going to hang up my brother's photos of some of the places we've been to and the only paintings will be something abstract. My friend decorated his place with his art student friends' abstract projects and it looks pretty cool. He didn't pay a thing though

I used to have the same discussion some years ago in school with my art teachers. They told me that "art" is everything what is at least called "art" once, doesn't matter who it was.
Now, a few years later, I think I've got the point. It's this kind of discussion what makes it more than just a piece better to be thrown away. If we don't like it (I surely don't), the only way to change this nuisance is to simply ignore it... but therefore, it's just too interesting, ist't it? ;-) Thorsten |
