Angry anyone else met a gamer needing a life??

Ok, bit of a rant but more a 'you must be kidding!'
My nephew went along to a warhammer night, got interested and has been playing for a few months, not having a lot of money, he couldn't get a tank that he wanted so I found some templates and made him one from the card packs his soldiers had come in.

When he went to play with it, the club games master yelled at him and told him he couldn't use it as it 'wasn't games workshop made'. As he had asked me to go that night to watch his new tank I was there and pointed out that it was ahobby and they encourage you to modify and convert stuff. He got all officious and said it had to have mostly games workshop material base or it wasn't acceptable. I couldn't help myself but picked the tank up, scraped of some of the paint and showed this "person" the GW logo. By this time my nephew was in tears and has now decided he doesn't want to play wargames anymore. This mongrel really steams my cookies, this kid (he's 10 btw) was so into this and he doesn't have much opportunity to get into anythig and to have his pride squashed by this A$$ really gets me.

I'm hoping he'll still be into modelling, I'm trying to find some non-warhammer related stuff for him to do as we had just started making a few tanks and things for him to use and now he doesn't want to touch it.

Thanks PPL, rant over !!!!! Brian

They seem to exist in all realms of life sadly, people that will always go for the criticism rather than the encouragement I remember at a classic car show a guy had on display a very nice Ford GT40 and was having to listen to some "expert" tell him how it was a good replica but this was wrong and that wasn't quite right. After the "expert" went off to rip apart someone else's car I approached the GT's owner and said " it's real one isn't it" he replied "yes but nothing I could say would of ever convinced him" not quite the same thing I know but it's is the same mentality.I truly hope you can get your nephew back into it all it's so important to have an interest and more so to be encouraged.

Lame - if it's a tournament I understand, but we used to use cardboard boxes to try things out at game night.

Well, I can't conclude the same thing from your perspective, but I used to have a friend who was and still is completely addicted to video games. That's literally all he does is play video games. And now he has no friends, no job, and no life.

Yes, it is sad and unacceptable when a young person shows up to an event thinking they have something real neat to contribute and then is confronted with a person like that. The game master needs a severe attitude adjustment.

This reminded me of a time in my life when my wife and I had the pleasure of hosting some of the particpants in the Internation Dance Festival held each year in Rexburg, Idaho. While ferrying our guests between events, my wife struck up a friendship with the leader of the Turkish delegation, one Safa Malik. While waiting for the practice session to get over, she and Safa overheard a conversation between a couple of the Rick's College coeds regarding a "jerk" that had asked one of them for a date. Safa, having very limited English, asked my wife "what is 'jerk?'" As it turned out, the keeper of the Georgian team (three of whom we were playing host to), a real KGB type named Albert, was a prime example of the type. My wife said "Jerk....Albert." Safa understood completely...and then called over his team's interpreter to make sure his reply would be understood. Which was "Ah, so that is 'jerk.' Sadly, in my country, we have them too. Allah, in his wisdom, spread them out so that we should all suffer equally." What is regretable is that he made so damned many of them, and that they tend to gravitate to positions of authority. Might I hazard a guess that this particular jerk was proprieter of the shop selling the Warhammer gaming material?

Ceck out our WarHammer40K subsection:

WarHammer40k - Zealot Hobby Forum

You son will find tanks and the like FREE that will be so awesome, people will be asking where he got them from. That guy sounds like a jerk. There are enough people playing this that I am sure with your help, your son will have no problem finding a better outfit to play with. This game pulls kids away from computer screens and teaches strategy. I personally think that aspect is refreshing. ARMORMAN is the preeminent authority on WarHammer40K and could probably really give you pointers o what kind of groups to look for. He may be better starting his own. P.M. ARMORMAN, he makes a bazillion models of these things.

miniature gaming should be a lot like christmas. unfortunately, there are some elements to the hobby who have over-commecialized it, and like christmas, taken the joy out of it...
