A 7' (2m) Cardboard Submarine
 

I remember the ads for this in my old comic books, but could never convince my parents to buy one for me. Thanks to this page; SECRET FUN BLOG: POLARIS NUCLEAR SUB PHOTO now I know what the real thing looked like! How cool was that for a kid back then? I probably would've have tried to put it on top of my pedal car to make it mobile. Watch out boys, here I come :eek:.

I remember that! There was a tank, too, as I recall. I wanted the tank so bad I could taste it! You've given me just a great idea for a present for a kid.

How hard could it be to scale one of our models up full size? Fed Ex Express has printers so that you can print just about anything to any size!

For my own sins, I've often daydreamed about the challenges involved in buildin a full size LEM. I believe the skin thickness of the card would probably be thicker than the original.

That would be quite a bit of cardboard to build a LEM! That thing was big!

I wonder if there are free plans on the web somewhere for these? They haven't been produced for sale since we were kids.

I have been thinking at length about this. The only real consideration is the size of the cardboard and graphics. One would almost have to paint the graphics.

A quick check shows that we can get corrugated cardboard sheets, 4 x 8 feet size, in a bundle of five for around $20 plus shipping.

If you go to Lowe's/HOme Depot, they'll save the large cardboard boxes for you.

Very way cool! - I remember seeing the same ads in comics down here as well but, like for most of us it seems, it was always well beyond our financial means...

If you enlarge the ad, you can see that the sub was sold by Honor House Products. So, I did the search and learned that the things were cheap and not representative of the ad. Further:

What happened to the mail order companies of the ’50s such as Honor House Products, Helen of Toy and Norton Products (no, not the virus people)? Simply put: no one knows. I have done some rather intensive research in to this and haven’t been able to get any information. I have even emailed comic book companies and asked if they have any back information on the matter, and they don’t.
Most likely these companies folded as soon as people realized the garbage they were pumping out.
Mail order toy companies still exist, but they seem to be a little more forward and honest with what you get.
