I wonder how well it cuts, and whether it would dull the blade faster than paper. There were other non-tree papers (coffee, mango, banana, etc.) that I think were discussed a while back and I think one member had good success with them, but I can't find the thread at the moment.

Damn interesting!
Wonder what it's foldability is? Cracking, tearing, etc.? Most importantly, does it glue well? Joe

Interesting, indeed, but as with all new materials it could take years for people to determine its best uses. The article did not make clear to me how this new material really was paper. I thought that making paper meant squishing fibers together, but the only kind of fibers I think of with stone is asbestos -- and that really would be starting down the wrong road.
As for saving trees, however, environmental concerns probably have gone too far. My understanding is that trees we use to make paper are the fastest growing of all trees, and that more of these trees exist now than ever before in the planet's history. So reducing your use of paper does not save oaks or maples or walnuts, nor does it have any effect on tropical rain forests. It's almost the situation that we make paper out of weed trees, so would have more weeds if we eliminated paper.

Yale, Plant growers have been using rock wool for years. Rock is heated and then spun like cotton candy once it becomes molten.
Got the feeling this won't work to well for flying models... Mike |

X-acto blades wouldn't be my first choce for cutting stone. Near lethal for fine cutting edges I would have thought.

Yale, environmental concerns involving the traditional production of paper from tree pulp go far beyond consumption of trees. The large amounts of water used and polluted by this method and the ensuing air pollution I think are currently the greater concerns. Ask anyone who lives within twenty miles of Canton NC and they can tell from the smell and haze or lack of it which way the wind is blowing on any given day.

seems like we are intended to grown trees to producing paper traditionally.
it is somehow ,ironically, paper production is environmental friendly; (???) because we grow trees (a lot) :| stone paper is not biodegradable, but it helps more in waste recycling process. ( Stone Paper Fact Vs Fiction | ) hopefully, this stone paper have a lot more advantage for some special purposes. ironically couldn't find some seller or distributor in my country (indonesia) (gosh..) :( http://www.jaw-crushers.net/low-carb...wder-grinding/ but there's a lot of banana paper easy to find (&cheap). ~,~ Last edited by hanyakertas; 04-04-2012 at 01:43 PM. |

What the heck, I'm sending the request for a sample to try out building paper models. If they send me one, I'll let you all know how it turns out.
I kinda doubt they will, but who knows? We could be a perfect early-adopter crowd. At least that is what I am going to suggest.... |
