Birth of Flight
A very good recommendation goes to the 3-DVD documentary series Birth of Flight: A History of Civil Aviation, from Mill Creek. It seems to be a British, possibly Australian, production, although the main narrator has a Scottish accent. I found it at Wal-Mart for just $4 -- actually half of an $8 two-pack, along with Railroads: Tracks across America.
The word "civil" is important, as there are almost no references to military aircraft. Perhaps this is why so much of the film footage was new to me. Every two or three minutes, the series showed another aircraft that would make a splendid model. And the film included footage of several models already included in the Downloads section, e.g., the MAIA/Mercury, Bristol Brabizon, Spruce Goose, DH Dragon, and Handley Page HP24.
