Exclamation USS Long Beach

Just saw this on Yahoo News, the USS Long Beach is going to be auctioned off for scrapping this week, Sad end for a historic warship which was the first nuclear powered surface ship. No possibility of having her turned into a museam, such as just happened with the USS Iowa (on display at Los Angeles according to the same article).

Just read it myself............. a shame we can't keep them.

Last I heard the funding for the Saratoga CVA-60 fell through and she'll be heading that way.

Why is it after the fact people go crazy and rant and rave about not saving the "insert your scrapped ship's name here". And won't do anything before they start chopping them up.

They did it with the Big E CV-6........... USS Cabot CVL-28....... and others.

At least you can see the Cabot's island if you go to the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola.

steps down off soapbox.......with his head hanging low

So they scrapped the Calbot too? I had read in a magazine the people who were trying to preserve her were in trouble some years ago. And I wonder how long the people preserving the USS Texas will be able to keep her on display.

My dad served on the Long Beach for a couple years. I have been on that ship. (hardly remember it now though).

All my dads ships are gone now. The America, the Kittyhawk, the Long Beach, the Hector, and a probably others I forgot. He did Damage control and Fire Fighting training so his last ship was the USS Buttercup out at Treasure Island in SF bay back when it was still Military. How things change...

Yeah she all gone except the island......... here's a video showing it being topple before being taking to the Naval Aviation Museum for display

USS CABOT LAST DAY STANDING - YouTube

Funny thing before she was scraped I was taking a zoo cruise in New Orleans, and we came a round bend in the river and low and behold there is a CVL carrier tied up to warf......... my jaw dropped. I was in such a state of shock it was latter that I realized I did not even take a picture. DOH!!!

Sure wished they could have saved her. It's hard to believe the landing TBM/TBF Avengers on such a small narrow deck!! They have a small area laid out on the floor at Pensacola........ it was really, really smal.

Your dad was west coast, mine was on the east coast.

He served on

USS Plymouth Rock LSD-29
USS Tarawa CV-40
USS Saratoga CV-60
USS Enterprise CVA(N)-65 He was on the commisioning detail.
USS Shangri-LA CVA-38

He retired off "The Shang" in '68.

This explains why I'm so partial to blue planes........ saw them all the time while growing up.

Yep, too bad a proud ship gets scrapped.

I saw a video of a ship I was a plankowner on get blown up by a torpedo in a Sinkex. USS Fletcher DD-992. Sad feeling.

It's like the CNO has an issue with the Enterprise............

CNO wants faster decommissioning for Enterprise - Navy News | News from Afghanistan & Iraq - Navy Times

I think he just wants the latest toy............

Heck the Air Force is flying planes older than the Enterprise......... can you say B-52? Sure I knew you could.

Man!.......... I'm getting old............
