F-15 Eagle – 40 years today

On July 27th, 1972, the F-15 Eagle made its maiden flight. For that reason, today we celebrate its 40 years of life (although it’s true that it only entered active service in January 1976).

Admired by many, criticized by others, and hated by some few (specially Mig pilots), there is no doubt the F-15 Eagle has been one of the most famous fighter planes of the western hemisphere in the past decades. Along with his brethren (F-14, F-16, F-18) is part of a special breed of aircraft that still today is highly acknowledged technologically speaking.

Oh, yes, and don’t forget that the F-15 Eagle it is still the only airplane credited as a satellite killer.

Since this is a paper models forum, let’s see what we find…

The F-15 Eagle has been released as pre-printed kits by the following publishers:

Modelart:
F-15 C Eagle
F-15 E Strike Eagle
F-15 I Raam
F-15 Bicentennial
All of this kits are at 1/32 scale.
Those are precision kits with lots of parts (more than 1,000). This kits can also be purchased as digital files.

I also did not realize that the F-15 is already 40 years old.
One correction about the ModelArt F-15 kits. Only the F-15C kit is offered in pre-printed format. and all F-15's (B/C/E/I) are offered in digital format. And until August,3rd there will be 40% discount on all F-15 kits. The 40% will be refunded after payment is made.

40% off...what a great deal.

Just a question
wouldn't it be better to discount the models beforehand (if you are accepting Paypal payment)
this way you lose less money to Paypal service fees?

or do they credit you the difference?

Thanks for the reminder of the F-15's first flight. When I was refueling aircraft in the Air Force, we heard a lot about the next generation fighter. Then I transferred to Public Affairs work and was assigned to Aviano AB, Italy.

It was there I saw my first Eagle. The aircraft was in the original "air superiority blue" paint scheme and stood tall and mighty, alone on its spot on the ramp. I remember thinking I have never seen a more beautiful aircraft. My mission that day was cover a flight in the aircraft which happened to be a B model. The Italian Air Force chief of staff was given the flight.

Following the flight, I interviewed him for a news article. He was beaming from ear to ear and so enthusiastic about the flight, I became a bit jealous. But the one thing that I remember most about the interview was when he told me about tracking autos on the autostrada. He related how the radar could lock on one car and track it, showing the speed the car is going. He quipped following that remark that if the autostrada has a speed limit, the F-15 would be perfect to take care of speeders..."lock on, track, shoot!"

Of course he was joking, but he was absolutely amazed at the capability of the radar on the aircraft.

Years later, I was assigned to the 21st Tactical Fighter Wing (now 3rd Wing) at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska (my second assignment there). The wing was transferring to F-15s from F-4Es and my office window offered me a view of the main runway. I never could pass up watching an Eagle land.

The bird looked so proud as it rolled out with its nose held high.

The McDonnell Douglas (I refuse to call it a Boeing bird) F-15 Eagle became my favorite that day on the ramp in Italy and it still is my favorite fighter.

And for me, the aircraft I got to know quite well in Alaska by providing up close and personal tours of the aircraft (and the base) for visitors, are now assigned to the Oregon Air Guard. The aircraft often make touch-n-go approaches to the airport here.

A great aircraft, with a great record and fabulous looks.

This bird has been one of my favorite aircraft since at the tender age of 20 I had the privilege of watching the second prototype execute a near vertical takeoff in front of the McDonnell Douglas hangar in St Louis. I was an engineering intern at the time when an announcement of the exhibition was played over the office intercom. Just about the entire McD D engineering staff assembled on the tarmac to watch the show. With the ability to accelerate going straight up it was the closest thing to a Cape Kenedy rocket launch that I have ever seen.

My favorite model of the F-15 was the simple fold-up flying model sold in the cafeteria gift shop. It depicted the mighty bird in classic air superiority blue. Or as we called it robins eggshell blue.

Great kits Moshe, I have built them, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, good instructions, great graphics.

I could change the prices in the store, but I meant the discount to apply only to the members of this forum, so I only announced it here. And when a refund is issued, Paypal reverses the whole transaction, and refunds also their service fees.
