T34 85 tank question

Ive been noticing, on the t34-85, how on earth did the sprockets turn the tracks? just friction? there are no teeth on the sprockets at all, and I'd really like to know how they worked

Between the sprocket disks are fairly substantial pins these are engaged by the
guide plates of the track. All the T-34 variants used the same drive sprocket. The drive sprocket seems to have been a Christie design - the BT tank had the same drive.
