Arrow Pearl harbor anniversary

Gang: In Memoriam of the Fallen on Pearl Harbor Day (07 Dec 1941) . Also pray for the Winnipeg Grenadiers, who tried to defend Hong Kong a few days later.

I visited the #3 deck gun from the USS Ward (DD-139) this morning (the day after Pearl Harbor Day). The USS Ward used this gun to sink a midget submarine that was trying to sneak into the harbor an hour before the air attack.

By coincidence the Ward was sunk after being struck by a kamikaze on December 7, 1944.

The gun is mounted on the grounds of the Minnesota State Capitol.

Very cool, I read the info on the link you provided.

Do you have any idea if the gun you stood on was removed before being sunk or was it recovered later?

The gun was removed when the Ward was changed from a destroyer to a high speed troop transport ship, prior to being sunk.

Another remarkable thing about the USS Ward is that she was built in a rush for destroyers for WWI, the keel was laid down on May 15, 1918 and launched 17-1/2 days later
