In my opinion it rivals many other space operas. The effects were great, the story moved along at a good pace and the characters were all interesting. Disney really blew it with this one. Not enough hype and advertising meant that nobody was ready... no-one was excited for it (when it came out). Instead the film's story and elements were just compared with other SciFi films. I remember hearing comments like "star wars ripoff" and "already been done...", etc. When in fact nobody was educated about one of the oldest SciFi series to exist...predating Star Wars and the like by about 60 years?

You can download the first five Mars books from Project Gutenberg. They are basically what the movie is based on.
Online Book Catalog - Overview - Project Gutenberg There are a lot of othe Edgar Rice Burroughs books available too.

All in all, I enjoyed the movie. Hollywood always takes some liberties when going to a screenplay, but you just have to accept it. Once you get over that, you can get back to enjoying the movie. Since the topic is your favorite Sci-Fi book, I have many. But the one I always remember is, "The Flying Sorcerers" by David Gerrold and Larry Niven. I really love a book with humor thrown in and this one has outright in-your-face and subtle within. You won't be disappointed! Best Regards,
