An interesting story, friend.
It says much of the value of the human being when your endurance is pushed to the limit.
And as we see in the movies, sometimes the car explodes or sinks the house when the good guys have escaped.

I've been aware of this incident for nearly 45 years and have heard many versions of what happened on that fateful day.

This just clears up a couple of details that I'd wondered about for those years.

That is truly awe inspiring. I've seen thousands of pictures of B-17s in war time, and so many of them show planes that landed with massive damage. You always wonder how they made it back. It's just remarkable that no one was injured or killed. Thanks for sharing this one.

Yep, growing up/through the years, I too have seen several times the summary and picture of that B-17. Mainly in the books I would check out of the library in school. Never seen that first image of the mail asking not to censor though.

That is one of the reasons my father would only fly on Boeing airliners. I once had a book called "Flying Fortress" by Edward Jablonski that has several pics such as this (and this one) of B-17 flying with MAJOR damage. It was a very overbuilt plane, one of the strongest planes of WW2..........Rich
