R.I.P. Ray Harryhausen

I could watch his movies all day. In honor of his memory I shall build the Earth vs the Flying Saucers model.

a lighthouse model with crashing waves, with a black silhouette of the Rhedrasaurus might be a fitting tribute.....

UHU02 also made a Talos. I'm very tempted to build one, or try to.

PS, is this is the EvFS model you're thinking of?

I literally grew up watching Harryhausen special effects. He and Willis O'Brien, from whom Harryhausen learned his craft, perfected stop motion. Here was a case where the student performed beyond his teacher. The first thing I actually remember seeing was The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, from a story by his friend, Ray Bradbury.

I recently purchased a DVD of Beast. It has Them (the one about the giant ants) on the reverse. What I didn't know was that there was a special on the disc. Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury, both quite old at the time, and in wheel chairs, discussing their youth, how they met, and their life-long friendship. Great stuff. It's distributed by Warner Home Video.

Paperhollywood.com has a link. It's small but I love that scene of the saucer hitting the Washington monument.

Truly a great talent, one whose work alternately thrilled and scared me throughout my childhood. Rest in peace.
