What is it?

New type of guessing game today...

I found this guy floating in my Dad's pool today. I know absolutely nothing about it.

What is it, turtle or tortoise?

-It's about 5 inches long.
-It seems to prefer to be under water.
-I'm currently home in Phoenix, Arizona.
-It has orange stripes along it's head.

Anybody have any answers as to what it is and what it might eat?

I've had one of those, it looks to be a Red Eared Slider turtle...commonly found in small ponds. At least that's where I found the one I had. This link has all the info you need including food choices
Red-eared Slider | Trachemys scripta | Reptile

Funnily enough, one year I found a Box turtle...had it for about 5 years (throughout my high school years). One day, I was out front washing my pick up and had my turtle with me outside and decided to let it walk in the grass a bit. Wrong choice...my turtle ran away on me! Yeah, yeah...how does a turtle run away? Well it did, never found it. LOL!

Looks to be a Rednecked Terrapin, a kind of turtle.
My father used to keep them way back in the 1960's when I was a preschooler.

He still has one in a large (2lb capacity) jar of formalin, the creature itself being about 5 inches long by 3+1/2 inches across. It had lived til the age of about 9 years.

As to diet, I seem to recall lichen from water weeds, mosquito larvae, feed-worms (as fed to tropical fish -- these are about 1 mm thick and about 20 mm long, a dark brown colour, much as one would see on dark brown leather shoes -- ) and goldfish food granules were all part of the animal's menu.

They like a tank about 15 inches long by 12 high by 13 wide, peagravel bed and a wet area as well as a "dry land" area. Keeping the tank's water filtered and clean is no more onerous than for a goldfish, though slightly better ventilation is required.

They require moderate warmth, anything above about 90 deg F is too hot, but likewise, anything below about 40 F is too cold.

The only note of caution is that their peripheral vision is not good, and thus holding their shell near their neck can result in the animal turning it's head swiftly and snapping it's jaw shut on the fingers of the person holding it. The bite is not harmful, but is painful.

That though, would seem to be their only disadvantage, so long as they cannot get out of the tank they reside in.

I hope the info helps, you Aaron, and wish you every success with the Terrapin.

Kind and Respectful Regards Aaron My Friend, Uyraell.

I had a small fish tank (10 to 15 gallon tank) which i filled with water deep enough for the turtle to float, but also to where its feet could touch the bottom. Maybe about 3 inches deep. Then on one side I had a pile of rocks, or a decorative item that is sold at pet stores for fish tanks, which allowed to the turtle to get out of the water completely. A heat lamp is also good so they can sun every so often. Get crickets from the pet store to feed them...and I think they sell nutritional turtle food. If you decide to keep it.

I can't keep it (Not allowed to have pets on the truck) but I think my brother and his wife are gonna adopt it. It looks exactly like the top pic in the link you posted, so that's what I think it is.

Update to my previous post:
Going by the photo Robert (3Turner) linked to above, the creature is identical to that My father kept.
I'd take it that it thus has two names for the same animal.
