continental divide Panama Canal

I found some old photos in a metal box while clearing out a storage building. Some were taken when I went through the Panama Canal. Here is one of the continental divide.

At least that was what I was told when I made it topside for a few minutes.

I have vague memories of a Blue Goose too.

I did not take a bunch of pictures in the machinery spaces. Here are a few that I found. This first bunch is from USS W. W. Sims (FF-1059) a 1200 psi steam propulsion plant.

Front of a distiller (we called them evaporators):

Steam reciprocating bilge pump:

Throttle board where we controlled the speed of the ship:

Reduction gears:

These are from USS Fletcher (DD-992), gas turbine propulsion:
Control valve:

My bunch and me from the forward engineroom in front of the control board:

After decomissioning USS Fletcher was sunk in a SINKEX 2008:

Thanks for sharing, Doug. You might appreciate one of my 'Pigpen' stories (chief machinist mate 'Pigpen' Burton, one of the characters that helped whip me into shape at the S1W prototype back in the late 60s). One evening Pigpen was standing the lower level engine room watch with an officer EOOW trainee, and during a lull in the shift, told his trainee to grab a swab and clean out the bilge under the main condenser. This particular trainee was a particularly obnoxious little ringknocker, who immediately responded with "swab out a bilge...do you realize I'm an Annapolis graduate!!?" To which Pigpen replied, "Sir, I didn't realize that, sir. Please, hand me the swab and I'll show you how to use it..."

I never had many problems with Annapolis grads. Most of the incidents like you related were with 1st Class Midshipman on their Midshipman cruise. One wanted some sigs in his PQS book for engineering. I was on the lower level at the lube oil purifier when he showed up asking questions about what I was doing. After the Q&A he wanted me to sign his PQS book. I told him that ain't the way it works and that I ask the questions and then he provides adequate answers before I sign off on that stuff. He got all huffy about it and made threatening sounding noises that I laughed off. A day later he came up to me and asked if I would quiz him on the same info so I did. He actually knew the answers. Well, adequately, any way.

Found some other photos taken on USS Fletcher:
Hung with your name attached when you screwed up:

We found some tights in a bale of rags and decided to stuff them and name it Super Snipe:

This is what usually happened:

Of course most of the situations with a nooner and Super Snipe were outright XXX pornographic.
