I've been happy with MalwareBytes, which was recommended by my local Internet provider.
Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download

Nothing beats vigilance and common sense.

I've been using MSE for years now, and I've yet to be infected.

But of course, I always avoid visiting "questionable" websites.
I also avoid opening "questionable" email attachments.

Howdy, y'all!
Being chronically short on funds, I'm using 'AVG 2013 Free' and 'SpyBot Search & Destroy', which is also free. They work together well and have saved my OS (and my hiney) more than once; if something isn't detected by one program, which rarely happens, the other one usually finds and takes care of it!
I've set AVG to automatic updates and scans every night, while I update and run SpyBot once, sometimes twice a week. Additionally, whenever I download anything, I check it with AVG (shell extension scan) AND SpyBot before opening it, particularly if it comes in zip or rar format. This has been working fine for me so far, and I can see no reason NOT to recommend this solution.
It would, of course, only be fair to make some donations to the guys (and gals?) behind these programs, but y'all sure know that ...

There is an option to buy there premium a/v software which has many more tweaks, but if you want something for free, then AVG is the way to go - and this of course is MHO
I too have been an AVG user for sometime.......the free version works very well and we have been more than pleased with the premium service. Found most of the more "famous" software to be intrusive and the cause of poor performance.

I have a subscription to AVG, it does not slow down my xp computer which other AV programs do.
I run my browsers in a sandbox.
I run MalwareBytes and Spybot Search and Destroy on a regular basis and the on line Housecall every now and then.
I run CCleaner and EasyCleaner to get rid of registry grunge.
If I was really paranoid and technical I would connect to the internet only with RAM installed Linux (Puppy Linux).
