Has this not been done before?

Automated aircraft landings have been made before as tests (without the pilot intervening).

In other words here, what is the extent of the mission profile without human intervention?

Yes the F/A-18 is a good example of computer aided landing and take offs. But there is a human still there waiting to take over if things are not going just hunky dory.

This is a full sized, very large drone. Think something one the lines of a un-manned F/A-18c. It's has been in development for several years, both airframe and avionics.

It did a full cycle of three takes offs and landings. Of course there will be a lot more testing, but this will open up the use of drones in the sense that we (the USA) will not have to ask permission of other countries to use their bases and their air space to deploy them.

IMO (as small as that is) manned aircraft will always be needed, just like manned bombers did not become obsolete with ICBMs. Drones just allow planners the ability to deploy them in different situations where manned aircraft would not be a good option.
