Stars & Stripes article

A while back, I was contacted by a reporter for Pacific Stars & Stripes. He wanted to interview me regarding an article on the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in The Philippines. As some of you know, I was there when the volcano erupted and destroyed Clark Air Base...my duty assignment at the time.

Well, I thought he had forgotten about article and thought nothing of it until I got an email from him about a week ago. The article was published in S&S and online. The online article can be read here.

There are some minor mistakes in the article, but for the most part, it is factual and well written.

Most interesting. Although I knew what a lahar was, I've wondered what your experience with one was. What a story to tell the grandkids!

I was on the USS Midway then. We helped evac Subic base. That was my last time there. It was actually a bit shocking knowing that was the last time in PI, it was like our home away from home (Yokosuka, Japan).

It was a shock to a lot of military folks when both Clark and Subic Bay closed. The Philippines was the of the "Wild West" places left and would have been a lot more fun had I not gotten there at a bad time.

From what I understand, Navy ships are once again calling in at Subic and Olongapo is doing good...as is the Clark area.
