Yes, there are quite a lot of pictures. But only a few with Piet as he hated it to be on a picture. But I'll put everything we have in the next posts. I want to publish a new part of his story every other day. Right now I'm working on the complete list of the models he designed. I'm pretty sure that I'll forget some because even he did not know what he had designed in his life. But when it comes to his important models we surely have Pictures

Did he attend any of the shows? I seem to remember seeing him in another photo somewhere.

Piet was in Bremerhaven at the international papermodelers convention every year since 1997. He was on some of the hobby shows, too - but not very often. Maybe a few times in Dortmund, once in Friedrichshafen and maybe once in Leipzig.

And yes - tell me about it. He should have had at least another 15 years. He's missed around her very, very much.

Peter Brandt's story pt. 2

The first papermodels that Piet built were ships from the German publisher Lehrmittelinstitut G.m.b.H. Wilhelmshaven (today Möwe Verlag). Already back then he was not satisfied with the level of details and he started to improve the models with the possibilities he had at that time. His incredible talent helped him to get a job as draftsman at Maybach Motorenbau (today MTU). During his military service in Wilhelmshaven he got to know Gerhard Neubert, the designer at the Lehrmittelinstitut back then, and a friendship developed between them. Piet admired Neuberts models, but he never got any insights on how Neubert designed his models.

In 1974 Piet got into business for himself as a technical illustrator in Hamburg. In 1976 he founded the Hamburger Modellbau-Verlag with the brand Alstermodell, which was in business only until 1977. It seems that the project failed due to the commercial part of the business for which Piet got himself a partner. Joachim Schulze convinced Piet later to work as a designer for the Jade-Verlag (successor of the Lehrmittelinstitut) and during the time between 1980 and 1988 he developed 15 models for this publisher. Piet and the publisher in Wilhelmshaven parted company when Siegfried Wolter took over. After a while without any papermodelling Piet met Liane Strüver and me back in 1996 and the most productive time of Piet’s career began.

Peter was an artist and it took special talent to work with him. As son of the artist Willi Scheuer, who wasn’t that different to Piet and loved to built papermodels as well, I found Piet’s style not unusual and quickly managed to work with him. Piet always wanted to work on all projects at the same time and then of course on all parts of the project simultaneously. Something at the framework had to be corrected, and quickly a bit of the inner parts of the bridge, beginning the lifeboat and when in that area why not continuing the davits. But before finishing that quickly working a bit on the skin of the hull which was already half done. I’m still amazed how he managed to keep all this in his mind. It simply worked – somehow. For the big project Bremen IV I took all the time necessary to work with him full-day. I simply wanted to know it. That meant organizing the parts, doing control builds, and looking after Piet’s daily sustenance and of course that Piet finished one part of the project before starting the next. And as a matter of fact this huge model took Piet only three months to design. An incredible achievement. Piet was amazingly productive when nothing distracted him. I learned a lot during times like these from Piet, because I could not only look over the master’s shoulder but also was Piet very generous in passing on his knowledge. Those designers who knew him can probably confirm this. This should change much later after he made some bad experiences. But among his fellow HMV designers he was tutor, mentor and teacher until his very end.

The list of his publications is long. I counted 90 and am pretty sure that I forgot something. Some models are listed more than once because they’re variants or completely revised. Some of the models he did together with other designers. But on top of all these models he took part in many other projects – as consultant or he drew some parts, made the hull or even the complete instructions. Just for fun I counted the parts of his publications and came to the incredible number of 95,000!

To be continued
