I was never topside when entering or leaving Pearl Harbor since my Sea and Anchor Detail station was always in the engineroom or the engineering Central Control Station. I heard the honors being rendered over the 1MC, though, when the ship passed by. Never visited the Memorial, either. We were in port for only one day each time. If I did not have duty that day or did not have to stay on the ship to fix something I usually headed for the North Shore for some R&I.
We also rendered honors when transiting Iron Bottom Sound near Guadalcanal. I was always in the engineroom then, also. One of my uncles was killed on Guadalcanal in 1942.
