Gotta wonder why this is hitting the news today, when it was announced in 2010.

A most interesting article. Thanks, Flyboy.

Maybe the reason for the new story is in this line: "All of the lessons from the [2010] X2 are being baked into the upcoming Sikorski S-97 Raider."

Since Ray pointed out that it's a Sikorsky, I have to say that it looks like a Corsair (which was also a Sikorsky, incidentally).

Two forum in-jokes in one sentence.

Problem is, the S-97 was announced in 2010 as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a helicopter junkie and love hearing about the X2 and S-97 (although they are ugly as hell, IMO), it's just weird for it to be a big deal again all of a sudden.

That being said, I think I may have answered my own question... according to various sources, the first flight of the S-97 should be happening sometime this year.

Still one of my favorites: Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wouldn't mind having one or two of these as well!

Question Nice toy, but........

My opinion is to spend the research money toward transport helicopters of multiple rotors ( like a quad rotor ). Attack helicopters are just expensive toys for the military. They are OK if no one is shooting back at them. However as was seen in a recent video in the Sinai desert, anyone with an SAM-7 MANPAD can knock it down and fast.

A transport utility helicopter makes allot of sense and is versatile in many situations. You can even launch drones from it to do the shooting while it is in a safe area.

I remember how reluctant the US army was to use Apache helicopters during the Balkan wars. They didn't want to get shot at.

It's nice... but (IMHO) limited in utility. Those big spinning rotors so close to the doors.

The S-97 just looks mean!
