Mars One ...reality TV?

Have you seen this (or am I just slow again? lol)

Mars One

Wiki info here:
Inspiration Mars Foundation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From what I read, this is one of many ideas to send colonists to Mars.
This is one of only two "one-way" missions (that I know of).

The whole project is already behind in funding, but that could change drastically.
And its getting a ton of criticism.

So...I think it can work.

Reality TV has proven this type of production can generate a ton of money
and thats how this project is being funded.
Imagine watching, over the next ten years, the selection and training of colonists, and then the trip and colonization of Mars
...all done Big Brother style on TV.

(Do you think they will have a Hot Tub?)

One criticism was of the fact that this type of mission had an extremely high chance of catastrophic failure,
and that even if the colonists made it to Mars, they would not survive beyond three months.

If I told you that on every episode of Survivor, one castaway would probably die, I guaranty the entire world would be watching the show.
And that is exactly why a reality TV project like this can't fail (from a production standpoint).
People will be tuning in to see what happens, kind of like watching a car race just to see the accidents.

-sucks to be the astronauts though.

I just think this sounds like an interesting project.
I'd go, if they offered me the chance.
And if reality TV is the way to make this happen, then I say git'r done!

[this is in no way a blanket endorsement of reality based TV programs)

It would be so amazing to see humans going to mars in my lifetime (what I doubt to happen).

But this kind of plan leaves a bad taste to me. More than at any other mankind's "firsts" of the past few hundret years, the explorers must feel to be someones plaything, because of avoidable (cost) reasons. I feel if the first manned mars mission has success, it should be more than luck like it seems here, it should be a sign for our understanding of the universe.

Why do we give away the chance to make the first humans to go to another planet as representatives of the curiosity of our species in a collaboration between nations in favour of the fame of a few people and companies? I'd like my taxes spent for a few astronauts on mars so much more than for wars on earth...

Being "voted off" might be real permanent...

"The tribe has spoken. The colonist voted out will be asked to leave the protective plastic bubble immediately."

If it was me, I would just go live in that big face building.

...
I think there may be some animosity from the neighbours.

My wife and I have talked about this and would readilly agree to go if given the chance. One thing though....what if the cardstock runs out and I can't build any more??????

Best regards,

i think your first project would be to figure out a way to make a cardstock substitute out of native materials. Maybe a lightweight ceramic paper?

well i don't think even that would make a "mars colony" any time soon

i mean i'm not pessimistic here but and i'm quoting Prof. Neil Tyson "there is no driver for the US to start a decent mars colony program but if china leaked out some document that it's going to build mars bases that pushes the (i don't wanna die) driver then and only then i can guarantee that the US will put a man on mars" so that said i don't really think that will work and i really think it's just another media trick to get more money

but heck if they're picking people to go there even if they die on landing choose me i don't care if i die at lease i'll be the first man to die on mars
