Thank you, John, for bringing this to my attention. There are so many lives out there that we know nothing about until they're done and gone. All the more reason to savour them now.

Above: As a result of your mentioning this, I visited the Internet Craftmanship Museum, initiated by Joseph Martin. Recommended!

I was sorry to hear of Joseph Martin's death, but was glad to learn about the Internet Craftmanship Museum, which is a wealth of information and a good tribute to model builders and artisans from all over the world.

Paper model of working Stirling engine

Among so many interesting features on the Internet Craftmanship Museum site I followed a couple of links to this paper model working Walking beam Stirling Engine (pattern is paper, working parts coke can, wire, plastic bottle neck, balloon):

You can download the pattern from the site, and there are multiple other instructional videos.

For a history of the Sherline Lathe http://www.lathes.co.uk/sherline/index.html I have to admit as a professional machinist I am less than impressed by the Sherlines, the Unimat and others of their ilk. But then I guess I was spoiled by lathes like these Hardinge HLV-H Lathe As the old saying goes you get what you pay for. Personally it is my opinion that most hobbiest lathes are likely to lead to frustration. Owning both a Jet 9x20 and a PM1027 PM1027 Metal Working Lathe I think I have a reasonable perspective on the matter. But if one does feel the need to look at a small tabletop lathe the offerings from Little Machine Shop might be a better choice.
