It seems my post has spurred some good discussion here. This hobby is supposed to be just that: a hobby. Earlier in my modeling career I was a bit thinned skinned and did not take criticism well. Now I build to relax and enjoy and every once in a while to surprise people with a "what the crap is that" or a "that can't be paper" comment.

If you ain't having fun, it ain't a hobby anymore, and if that's the case, why bother?
That said, for some hombres, nit-picking IS their hobby, and the other aspect, whether it's modeling, golf, or whatever, is just incidental. Their real object is to criticize and be "right". We'll probably see Judgmental Critiquing become an Olympic sport one day..... Some great discussion has come out of this thread, so, thanks, Greg, for getting the ball rolling. Wyvern |

and in the end it comes down to how agreeable the group is toward you and your models.
Sure, there will always be certain rules for certain awards, and thats fair. Thats why we often end up with so many different categories, to recognize the many different aspects of modeling. But if the general concensus is very narrowminded, then it will not only reflect in the way you are received by your "peers" it will also reflect (unfairly) in the judging of competitions. I'm not referring to paper modeling, but any approach to model building. Every builder has their own skills and interests and opinions on what makes a model. And that is going to affect how they view judging of competition. But the paper model bias is also an important factor. I had a similar experience ....with the Hamilton Ontario chapter of the IPMS. The attitude was extremely negative toward a non-plastic entry. Not only was my entry completely ignored during judging, but there was a general lack of enthusiasm and willingness to assist a first time attendee and competitor. On the opposite side, the London Ontario IPMS chapter guys could not have been more inviting and receptive when I attended their bi-annual show and competition in 2012. I was blown away by the open interest and lack of snobbery. ... If nothing else Greg, at least you have a local group to "play with". I just wish I could find a local club that I could take part in. I'd even consider trying to convert some plastic "snobs".

The word "rivet" appears 24 times so far in this thread. I know, I counted them!
(Note: I have had to exclude the "rivets" in all re-quoted text, these are cut-n-pastes, therefore aren't original rivets! ) |

And if you upscale them to 1:1 they will be 1.2573mm off.
It is like what has been stated before. If someone likes what you have presented it will be OK. If not they will find something to complain about. Murph has the right idea.
