I have like 2.5 gig's, including all the downloaded models (free or purchased), reference pictures and other miscellaneous paper model stuff. I cleared out about the same amount 6 or 8 months ago realizing I'd never build it and have been much more selective about what I save and download.

You would be surprised to find how difficult some of those models are to get now. Some are no longer available. I consider it archiving, for future generations.

Zathros, not surprised at all, I have seen too many websites disappear and feel so grateful I got the models when I did...(If only I could share them without making many people mad).

Dunno what too big is. I don't know that I accept that as a limitation!! No such thing as too much. I grab every drawing and plan that I find.
I just want to share an admonition. BACKUP! I've never lost anything important due to a crash but conceive that to be mostly luck with a little forethought. I have a USB drive - not a thumb drive, an actual disc - that sits idle most of its life. My design files, collections of rare photos, downloaded stuff, etc. that I deem valuable is regularly backed up there. Otherwise it sits unplugged. Discs are mechanical devices that rely on tiny heads moving accurately over coated aluminum discs. The higher the storage density the more delicate the mechanism. My engineering intuition tells me that it will last longer if it is on less. I could be wrong but don't feel like I am right now. "Just be careful out there" to borrow a Hill Street Blues saying. All 'puter storage is vaporous and your only safeguard is redundancy. Carl (being an absolute load and thick as a brick for a change.) |

Rest assured Carl, everything I have on my PC is first burned to DVD before it is put on the hard drive. I don't consider the external hard drive a backup...just quick access.
