Of course our thoughts go out to the families of all affected.

I understand the pilot did not eject and was recovered from the wreckage. Indeed one picture shows the canopy still on the aircraft at the point of impact, so that seems to be true.

These are the first fatalities of a spectator or bystander at a British airshow in almost 63 years. A very sad end to an amazing safety record.

I am sure that after a full investigation of the cause of the crash, there will be changes to the way the flying demonstrations are performed. Altitude, directions , flying box, etc.....

My prayers go to the victims and their loved ones.

We've had two fatal Hawker Hunter crashes near Naval Air Station Point Mugu in recent years (2012 and 2014). Both were operated by Airborne Tactical Advantage Company, and were used as "adversaries" in Navy jet combat simulations.

Another fatal Hunter crash occurred during an Oregon air show in 2006. A listing of recent accidents involving the Hawker Hunter (actually the last page of the plane's entire military and civilian records dating back to the 1950s) is here:

Aviation Safety Network > ASN Aviation Safety WikiBase > ASN Aviation Safety Database results

Naturally, it's too early to speculate on the cause of the Shoreham disaster. But one wonders if some of these early jets (including civillian-owned F-86s and MiGs) might be getting too old for high-stress acrobatics. Maintenance and parts may also be a growing concern. It will be a sad day when these veterans are eventually grounded, but first-and second-generation fighter jets are highly demanding aircraft both on the ground and in the air, and as time takes its toll on airframes (and qualified pilots), we may see more incidents, followed by tighter regulations.
