Doing Davinci

Hi all,

For all of us model builders, this might be a fun series to watch

Doing Davinci.

A team of builders will be building all of Davinci's inventions, like the Tank, and others.

Doing DaVinci : Discovery Channel

On Discovery at 10pm E/P for those in the States

Rick

Kevin,

Discovery tends to repeat alot of their programs, check out their online broadcast schedule, and see when they will repeat this episode

Wasn't it great how they used DaVinci's CNC machine to make those bearing bushings? And DaVinci's chop saw to cut through that 4" thick solid steel beam?

Make three wheels with 40 holes and one with 39 holes.
Make sure you are 1/8 of an inch off on those plywood panels.
Bitch at the design engineer.

A while back some cable network had a show where they tried to duplicate some ancient structures that were actually built back then. One of the best was when they made a rope suspension bridge by first gathering the tufts of grass that looked like they were around 50cm long and braided them into rope. Eventually there was enough rope to span the chasm and make the walkway. Another show tried to explain and show how Julius Caeser's army was able to build that wooden bridge across the Rhine.

I like those kind of shows on TV, despite the fact that some like the DaVinci one take some extreme shortcuts. They are still interesting, showing how those folks back then could come up with neat stuff. Imagine if that Roman soldier hadn't killed Archimedes in Syracuse.

I thought the most interesting moment was when they realized that if built according to DaVinci's sketch, two of the wheels would rotate in opposition to the other two.

Yeah, I'm sure if DaVinci had had access to a welded steel superstructure for his tank he would have used it! Still, it was fun to watch. I'll watch the rest of the series but probably won't miss it too much when it's gone.

That tank would be a good start for a beginning paper model designer, though...

Leonardo's Robots and Model

This site has great Da Vinci information.
LEONARDO3 Home ENG - Leonardo da Vinci | OFFICIAL WEBSITE

Including many of his machines
LEONARDO3 - Leonardo da Vinci | MACHINES COLLECTON - COLLEZIONE DELLE MACCHINE

And a book about his robots that includes models (the self propelled cart is included at 1:4 scale).
LEONARDO3 - Leonardo da Vinci | STORE - NEGOZIO

I would love to see this as a paper model, one of the books has a paper model in it but it is basically a box with flat wheels attached. The accurate wood and steel model is more what I had in mind.

Wink Now there's a thought...

A series of Da vinci paper models! I know someone came out with a book of these once, but whay a challenge for our little cadre...

What a contest that would be. And in the end, a great donation to a local school. HMMMMMMM...
