Nice toy until one gets shot down and the pilots captured.

Why not just send a whole bunch of B-52 and have them unleash hell from 35,000 feet day and night. The nonsense will be over in a month.

It's still a viable aircraft for the COIN mission. It'll get the job done. I'd rather have that overhead than a fast mover any day. The ability to be a FastFac and put ordinance on target is what the troops on the ground need, forget drones they are overrated and carpet bombing is not the answer.

How'd that work out in Vietnam?

Carpet bombing is only effective on a linear battlefield. Iraq and Afganistan are definitely not linear. You have to think outside the box,and throw the "book" away to fight on these battlefields. Looks like someone in The military grew some brains finally .

lets see:

Vietnam was fighting colonial powers. France and then the USA that had no business there to begin with. Almost the same as in Iraq and Syria. However, the difference is that in Vietnam, they had a standing army and a real air force that defended the sky. None of that exists with ISIS. Today we have precision munitions that land anywhere and not in a straight line. So no need to carpet bomb ( which is a waste anyway ). Then there are no trees, or mountains to speak of. Mostly flat land and that is easy to target from high altitude and cut off supplies in and out of the areas targeted.
This is no Counter Insurgency war either where a few guys hide in the jungle. ISIS has AA guns and MPADs that shoot down low flying aircraft. So basically you want to fly as high as you can.

So basically, if we want to just send a few toys there, then might as well leave the place to its own and let the locals take care of their own issues ( which would never happened had the US not invaded Iraq ).
