If you saw the Wild Geese, you had to see the Dogs of War. I remember visiting British Honduras a while back and when I landed, I noticed the sandbag positions and quad fifties at each end of the runway. I wondered if the flight had deviated and landed us back in Viet Nam. I had a good time and took some R and R with some of the Brits in Honduras.

If it was still called British Honduras, it was before I got there Mate, but undoubtedly The Big C, Raul's Rose Garden, and The Upstairs Cafe were among the places of interest the boys would have taken you?
But any downtime I had from the Jungle Training School there was spent scuba diving from San Pedro, Ambergris Cay. Nearest place to Heaven I ever found on this Earth back then, but It's expanded into a major tourist/expat area now.

It was Belize, I just use that to bring back history lessons to those who do not remember the other names seldom used like Saigon, Tudo Street, Rhodesia, Formosa and the Falklands. I Remember Raul and the first time I used limes popped into a cold beer. I think the name of the beer was Port Royal. I was young and dumb back then, 1974.

I remember the first time I landed in Belize. I was in a VC-10, and sat next to some VIP's wife. On seeing the "Film set" jungle runway with the sand bag gun positions dotted around, I turned to the lady and jokingly said "Welcome to Belize International Airport." She was horrified!
As the plane taxied over to the Arrivals shed, low and behold what did we see? ... A ruddy great Red hoarding that said "Welcome to Belize International Airport". I just couldn't stop laughing, but it turned out that the RAF runway had been extended 200m in order to land the VC-10 refueller, or more to the point, to allow it to take off fully loaded. This opened the door to many other civilian airliners of course, and they had an even bigger tin shed terminal a bit further up from the RAF one.

I've only been to Belize once, and that was in a Rich International DC - 6 out of Miami. The plane I was flying, a BAC 1-11, was in for maintenance in Miami so I had time to kill. Took me a few weeks of buying dinners and liquid beverages to those that were in charge, just to get the ride. It was worth every penny. That was back in the mid 80's. Bet you can't do that today!!
From what little I saw it looked beautiful. |
