Han Solo isn't Han Solo !?

So, Disney have started tinkering with SW canon. Now, apparently, Han Solo is not that character's real name. OK, I admit, going by the state of the world, and the horrific event down in London, this is less than minor, but it is still (very) mildly annoying. The crux of the matter is, will Disney now play fast and loose with the SW universe now that they own it ? This is another example of big companies mucking about with their property in order to create controversy.

Or to create money.
Just as Lucas himself did so many times for so many years.

I also loved Han Solo and Star Wars when I was a child.

But.
Is just a fictional character. So who cares?
It's theirs, so they can do what they f... please.
I bet they didn' choose to tinker with the character's "personal" history just to angry you or other die-hard fans.
They wanted money, they could do it, so they did it.
Not a big drama.

Wasn't there a comic series where he burned his draft card? I can't remember if this was before or after he rescued Chewbacca. Maybe a name change was in order to remain free outside of an Imperial Stockade?

I recently read somewhere what I think is an excellent idea with more than a little relevance here. It said:

Every film production should have a "whack-reader" on the film set, an assistant who reads the book on which the film is based and whacks the director or producer with the book anytime one of them says, "What if the character did this instead."

It would prevent a lot of ham-handed adaptations, like the one that turned THE HOBBIT into three feature-length movies.

I wish somebody had done that with the people who made the new CHIPs movie. Took one of my favorite wholesome childhood shows, and completely destroyed it.

I kinda wish I could afford to buy all the rights to Emergency!, so I could refuse to allow Hollywood to ruin that.

its just what they did with the classic stories when movies came out. they are dumbing it down to the lowest common denominator because no one will read Shakespeare or any other classic. you need to look to the past in movies and see the future. im sure one day luke skywalker will be a crackhead and get kidnapped and left in the hands of slavers until some whacko rescues him and then he sees a cartoon and imagines himself into being a jedi, while a universe destroying darth vader has a death black hole and Luke simply throws trash bombs on to it until they quit and go away.

YES! I knew he was christened "Indy"! At last we will have that confirmed! :D

That's for sure.

He will always be "the Han who shot first" for me.

Kidding aside: I always assumed he was called "Solo" because he prefered to rely on himself. He knew the galaxy was full of scoundrels and trusted no-one except Chewie.

I think our memories of beloved films and television shows, but especially when to comes to tv, are often distorted. A couple of years ago CMT was running a Dukes of Hazard marathon and I watched about four or six episodes. I can't believe I ever thought that show was entertaining!

It really makes me leary to watch other shows from my childhood. . .

But when it comes to re-makes, I think the hits and the misses are about equal. Having said that though, I don't think my wife will ever forgive JJ Abrams for killing Han.

Han was supposed to die in "Return of the Jedi". Both George and Harrison felt there was not much story to tell so having Han encased in Carbonite sounded like the perfect opportunity to let him die. I don't know what caused the change of heart, maybe it was the strong popularity among the fans, maybe someone stepped forward and mentioned, the movie was perfect to release the same action figure version of the character, but this time sporting a trench coat to make people buy it again.
