What's your holy grail?
I've seen this in other forums, but didn't find anything similar here.
And also was inspired by Kevin's thread on the Aeroflot kits. I was wondering, what do you consider to be your "holy grail"? And I mean in terms of a printed kit you know exists (or existed), but you could never get. Or one kit you once had but lost and could never find again. (I don't mean in terms of "what you would like to see designed", as there is another thread for that Here ) In my case, and by the time being, that would be original prints of the old Dutch kit of the Flying fortress, or the quite rare 1940ish German kit of the KDF- Käfer (VW Beetle). Both photos taken from eBay long time ago. What's yours?

Ah well, Ruben, you know mine - those Bulgarian kits!
My obsession with them is due to the fact I was a plastic, not paper, modeller back then in the old days. Encountering these on board flights, and having an interest in aircraft, I kept them. Some time later - they were attractive little aircraft and decent models as well - I decided to make them. My first proper paper models! They didn't start me on paper modelling then (eventually the high cost of plastic kits and paints did!) but when many years later I then started paper modelling I remembered these kits and ever since then have wanted to make them again. I am also curious as to the designer, the aircraft and actually how good they are/were....!!!! I remember the results being pretty impressive (to a then paper modeller).

I found my grail. Back in the early 1950s, Nash dealerships gave out card kits of (who would have guessed) a Nash dealership, complete with cars and service department. I drove my dad nuts taking test drives so I could replace the kits as I played them to death. I scored one on Ebay a couple of years ago for far more than it was worth. I probably never will assemble it, just pull it out and look at it every so often.

Until about a decade ago, it would have been the DC-2 "De Uiver" (The Stork) from KLM, back in the 1980's I built this kit, was about 85% done with it, until my brother destroyed it in a fit of rage, it took a trip of my parents back to the Netherlands, and me doing some searching and emailing, to acquire 2 copies of the DC-2.
The Aviation Museum in Lelystad has copies available, and there is where my dad picked up those 2 copies for me. the kit was released as a fundraiser for the restoration and subsequent commemorative flight of the 50th anniversary of the 1934 London to Melbourne race. the DC-2 was the only civilian airliner to compete and complete the trip. If I were to say what is on my wishlist now, it would be the model of an off shore oil rig, my dad brought back from a business trip to a company that produced machinery for the chemical industry. I built the rig, and both cranes on it, had string hanging from the booms to the hook, and there was even a burn off flame. I doubt I will ever find another copy of this kit, so I go to my next wish In the early 1980's a truck model was released by Nutricia, a Dutch dairy company, of one of their truck and trailer combos. I remember building it, because it also a toy, a forklift, pallets and the truck were included Our friends at De Prins Bouwplaten, run by Koen Berfelo have this kit, it was designed by Koen's dad Jan. Maybe one day when I am able to go back and visit the Netherlands, and I can swing by Koen, I can pick up some kits, and relive my youth Rick

For me, the Demoiselle published by Old Timers (I think) and I believe it was mixed media. If I recall, Rob (Papermodelfan) may have built one a long time ago.
Also, the Supermarine S5 from Hooten although it has always too expensive for my budget (Papermodelfan had displayed it at one of the conventions years ago). |
