Went back to PC and set about reorganising my hard drives. I just might be able to find some things a little quicker now, but there's still a long way to go.

One of my next door neighbors has four cats (All female I think), and the other side has a monstrous Tom. That's more than enough for me Gary, as they all seem to prefer my garden to their own. I get on with them quite well, but the wife won't allow them in the house at all. They do still try though, and when I doze off I quite often find a cat snuggling up to me on the sofa. Surprisingly it's the big tom that is the most affectionate.

However, we often babysit an oldish Jack Russell, and both my sons bring a dog with them on visits (GSD and a bull Terrier) so the cats tend to peep round corners or from the fence top to check before strolling in nowadays..

We changed nothing else. We only talked to them. But, of course, we didn’t just talk to them… we also used our body language. I have learned not to underestimate a cat’s amazing ability to read our subtitles.
We don’t know our bodies are talking to them, but they are.
This is probably why my own speech is so well-received. I’m an animated person; I gesture, I do a lot of facial expression, I use my whole upper body when I speak to my cats. They gaze intently upon me. And then, much of the time, they seem to understand.

How much gets through is not dependent on the cat’s vocabulary. It depends on how much we trust and understand each other. We don’t speak each other’s language exactly.
But we both have the ability to convey meaning. And that will get the job, done.

And

Are we interpreting accurately? There’s the common mistake of thinking every time a cat asks us for something, they want food. We check, see the dish is full, and then get exasperated because the cat is still asking. But cats ask for many more things than that, and we certainly want them to do so.

Are we listening to our cat enough?
