Now that you mention....

I'm trying now.

Direct link (which I have used forever to embed images everywhere here at pm.com at other places):

And now IMG code:

And now IMG thumbnail:

So, thumbnails still show.

But once I click on the thumbnail, it send me to the supposed location of the original image, but it shows the grey photobucket ad.

I have to click on the zoom (+) icon there to finally get to see the original image.

Having a look at this thread, all images originally embedded now show for me the PB grey ad.
Ford Thunderbird 1955 - scale 1/20 (paper model)

This may not be a serious problem for people with a small amount of images in their account, as they can migrate to other service, upload there and re-link.

But, when we have hundreds of images it is cumbersome. And in the case of forums like this one (and others), where editing options are disabled after a time, things get very complicated.

There was no notice. No word of warning.

Probably current paid accounts are not affected yet.
But better to check with client support to learn if they'll change things in the future.

You said it. Devastating is the right word.

I just read a discussion on another website, and some good points were made.

Anyone new to photobucket will move along now that photos sharing isn'r free.
Photobucket has already seen a complete loss of any new clients.

Existing clients will flock away in droves.
No-one will tolerate $400 a year for photo sharing.

Photobucket will self implode if they don't reverse this decision.
There is no way the company will survive this.
Even if they reverse the decision, they have already shot themselves in the foot.

I've just received a full download of my Bucket. It took them a while to put it together, but it was 1,912 pictures, and I somehow doubt that I'm the only one to ask.

Any recommendations for a new hosting site? Meantime, can someone point me to the instructions for using the onsite gallery method.

I was finally able to download my library from photobucket. It took a while probably because as John mentioned a lot of folks were doing the same.

Imgur Image Hosting looks OK. I have been using it for a while and have not run into any problems.

Pretty disastrous for forums like this one.

Some people posts are now a real mess - and will stay like that too unfortunately.

And I wonder what Photobucket are smoking? What a rash decision to spring on everyone. Especially when data is actually getting cheaper!

If they wanted to charge a low cost would have kept everyone happy.

Their icons are now strewn across the Internet forever, just reinforcing how rash their approach was.

Bye bye Photobucket! Into the history books soon....!

Fred, see my post #4 of this thread. You can recover your photos. It does work, but it can take them a while to do it. I got an email today informing me that my "Bucket" download was ready, and I successfully downloaded a zip file of 1,912 pictures.

It seems that nothing short of coughing up the $40 a month or $400 a year is gonna reinstate the 3rd party hosted pictures in the forum threads though.

Yup - the disaster lies in the contents of all the posts out there that people have made!

As I mentioned, to cap it all Photobucket really demonstrate their ineptitude by replacing the photos with their icon.

Rather they should have started with new users/posts and left existing photos alone.

Their approach almost reeks of blackmail!

Glad that I never used their service...
