When I started digital photography and posting on forums, I briefly looked at various hosting sites including P-bucket but decided against it... Even back then threads on various fora were rife with broken links, and I didn't d see the point... I've always used the photos uploader on whatever particular forum and never had a problem really... Some are easier to use than others but still, once uploaded to the thread they're there for good unless the site melts down...

Photobucket Just Broke Billions of Photos Across the Web

It’s not a huge surprise to see a decision like this. Advertising revenues are declining for publishers, and the costs of servers to host 10 billion images are surely incredibly high (especially when requests are made for them from all over the Web). While other free services remain, it seems fairly likely that others will follow suit and start charging for hosting files too.
As for me,
"Storage is 16% full"

I have roughly 3300 photos stored at photobucket.
These are divided across about 60 category folders for convenience.

I pay for an older monthly/yearly plan that doesn't exist anymore.
but I am only using 5% of my storage.

This is partly because I pre-edit and resize the majority of photos to 800x600 for web posting.
I still have all my originals so I have no real consern about losing photos at photobucket.

My concern is obviously the hundreds and thousands of threads I have posted across many forums detailing model builds, design processes and tutorials.
Not to mention all the new model release announcements.
Being the second highest poster here, this forum holds a ton of my stuff.

Even if I had the ability to edit all my threads and posts on every forum
and update all my images to new locations,
I wouldn't have the weeks and months it would take to do that!

Many sites like this one, restrict the ability to edit your own posts after a short time,
so if images disappear, theres nothing I can do about it.
My image dependant threads are destined to become text only.

I agree with what someone else said, that at the very least
it would have been nice if photobucket did not replace photos with such a large and awful looking image.
Bad enough to lose the photos in a thread in this way,
but to see a string of these huge ugly ads really adds insult to injury!

Since I host my own websites and have a ton of available web storage space,
I may look into storing my own photos.
My problem is the interface that I enjoyed at photobucket.
Being able to store images in folders and subfolders and create a visible thumbnail library that I can search through and repost images.
Photobucket's design and layout was perfect for my needs.

Has anyone considered facebook?
Photo albums with thumbnail images that can be easily searched....
No limits against size or quality or quantity...
Linking is as easy as copying the image address and repasting.
No, you don't have embedding codes or thumbnail coding, but for straightforward inline pasting it works.

I'm considering this too.

I don't need to prove anything to you?
I have no interest in "getting back to you".
And no, I won't be reading 2400 comments about facebook anti-malware...?

We were discussing photobucket and alternate image hosting/linking.
What does facebook anti-malware programs have to do with that?

My question, since you need clarification, is "has anyone considered using facebook to store their images and then linkpost them".

I haven't seen any restrictions as far as storage space, image size or quality
or any blocks to copying/pasting and linkposting images on other sites.
And I like the basic album, and thumbnail sorting of images.
No, the albums and photos are not private, like they were on photobucket, but...

all I got to do is pre-edit my photos, and resize them to a reasonable forum size (800x600?)

I don't use Photobucket or Facebook hosting, but...
2400 negatives out of 1.2 billion members doesn't sound unreasonable.
I'm sure McDonalds has a much higher dissatisfied customer ratio but lots of gullible people still eat there every day. Just sayin'.

Is there a point in linking to a post now 5 years old?
A lot of things happen in the internet in the course of 5 years.
And the link is not even related with the topic discussed (storage of images).
My personal experience: I've used Facebook for some 8 or 9 years without any problem whatsoever (other than the annoying ads in the newsfeed).

As long as it doesn't violate the basic rules, any image is allowed in Facebook.

I haven't used much the FB image storage capabilities, besides storing personal images in albums for the family to see. Those points you mention are good points indeed.

I thought at one time FB itself reduced the size and quality of the images.
Once I tried downloading an image I uploaded to a fanpage, and compared it to the original in my HD. The downloaded image was smaller in Kb.

However, now that I see your linked image of the F-18, at this big size, makes me think differently about quality of the stored files there.

I see also that the path of the linked photo you just posted doesn't give a clue to any personal profile or to the path of the album. So unless you share the specific address of your profile, or of the album, there isn't much concern about personal privacy when sharing an image in a forum.

yeah, I know not everyone loves facebook.
I personally find it very annoying in many ways.

but I am just talking about piggybacking off their photo hosting.
There upload system is simple.
You can create albums, and view a page of albums to choose from.
Images in the albums are thumbnailed and sorted by recent posting...easily searchable.
Copy and paste using image link/address is pretty simple.

So, unless facebook puts caps or restricts 3rd party linking in someway,
it might be a good option for photo storage.

My only real issue is with privacy of albums.
At photobucket my albums are private so nobody can view more than the one photo I am posting
and photobucket can't sell prints of any of my images.

...
I found another image hosting site last night...just started to see how it works.
TinyPic TinyPic - Free Image Hosting, Photo Sharing & Video Hosting

No real opinion yet, other than I used their app on my forum (for image attachments)
since I don't have the web storage space.
