Less of "The Right Stuff"
The Right Stuff will always be my most favorite (Space? Non Sci-Fi) movies.
yes, I know...its not perfectly accurate in many ways. What movie/screenplay ever is. But I think its very faithful to the achievements of early American space travel and makes you feel very proud of what man has accomplished. And its a very cool movie!! I was saddened to hear of Sam Shepards passing at age 73. I've seen him in many movies, but I always loved his portrayal of Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff. I didn't know he had Lou Gehrigs disease. It feels almost like losing one of the real Astronauts or Aviation Heroes. Isn't that weird. http://www.nydailynews.com/entertain...icle-1.3371560

Cool scene.
Just in case theres anyone who didn't understand...Beemans Gum Still around today. Yeager asks for it, because its a commitment to "pay it back" ...in other words, he has to return to do that. Kinda like saying "wish me luck". I think theres another scene, on board the X1 carry plane, when they discuss Beemans.

Beeman's also appears in the movie "The Rocketeer". According to the web, it was a popular gum to chew with a lot of pilots because the pepsin that gives it flavor had a settling effect on the stomach.
For US readers, you can often find it at Cracker Barrel restaurants. Sorry to hijack your thread, Dave. RIP, Mr. Sheppard. Wyvern |

My first thought of Shepard is as a playwright. Winner of many Obie awards. Also a Pulitzer Prize. "True West" and "Buried Child" are staples of college/university theatre.
As for movies - Yeager, of course. But my two favorites are the farmer in "Days of Heaven" and Frank Ford in "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford."

That was sad news about Sam Sheppard's death.
I mostly remember him from "The Right Stuff" and as General Garrison in "Black Hawk Down". I didn't realize until after his death his tremendous number of accomplishment outside of Hollywood, and how prolific a playwright he was, and winning the Pulizer Prize. Gives me a whole new respect for the man. I'm sorry that it came only after his death. Clare |

One of my favourite movies, one of my favourite scenes, and Debussy's 'Claire De Lune' is forever associated with a Starfighter touching space at full tilt forever more.
Sam Sheppard is indeed going to be sorely missed, but his life was given graciously and in elevating art and science together - and he was a great writer besides, so made fantastic contributions even further afield. Thank you again for posting this video, its a favourite. |
