Paper category at IPMS shows
I was recently contacted by a regional IPMS representative regarding the level of interest paper modelers might have in attending IPMS shows if there was a separate category for card models. IPMS National shows have had paper categories for some time now, but the smaller local and regional shows have been paper free for the most part. A couple of upcoming events of particular interest are a May 20ish 2018 show in Bethpage, LI, and a mid-April 2019 show in Latham, NY (near Albany). Paper models on display at IPMS shows would be a good way to expose more people to our hobby. Please take a moment to participate in this poll, to help determine the current level of interest in the broad paper modeling community. You may select multiple options.

Hmmm, doesn't the poll appear on the home page as well as in this thread? I've not done one before, so I may have missed a step.

Don,
Without trying to sound braggy, I have been participating in IPMS contests, both with my local club, and in several clubs within driving distance. I have competed up to the Regional level, and done well. I do enter the paper category, which is usually in the misc class. I also enter against the plastic friends, in their own categories, often being rewarded with several "Best of" awards, special awards, and even a couple of Best of Show. I judge the IPMS contests, and I have taught several clubs how to judge a paper model. I compete (I did take the last year off from competition), and I have only really only seen one IPMS club in my travels that "snubbed" their noses at paper kits. But they are the minority. If you need any help, let me know. I'm not sure that the broader segment of our hobby is willing to be that competitive. The real secret, is building a paper model to the IPMS judging level.

Since I live here in Western Oregon (just south of Salem), I have not met anyone who is into paper model building. I did attend a local IPMS, but I very quickly got the "cold shoulder". Even though, I was not told to not come back, I did not feel welcome there at all. So if there is a paper division in this area, I would be very willing to join.

Chris,
Maybe it's time to make yourself known! Join the local club. Do a demo on what it takes to make a paper model. It worked wonders for me, as they had no idea what was really involved. Join them and help at their show/contest. Eventually, they realize it's not "origami"

The response that I got was "Oh how quaint. It's paper. Have you actually thought about making real models that take real skill?" I said that a paper model actually takes quite a bit of skill to build. If you would allow me to put on a workshop with "Q&A", everyone here could see what all goes into a paper model and how much skill is needed. I was informed that no one was really interested in a dead hobby "poor-mans" hobby. So, needless to say, I never returned.

Chris, Wow!
I'm not even sure how to address this. Here in Central Arkansas, and all the areas I have visited, I have never met such rude opposition to a fellow modeller. The only consolation I could offer is to enter their shows and show them what its about Perhaps start with a display table. Once interest develops, go back to the club meetings. Show up with models for show and tell. As for such a closed minded club " president", I have to think he does not care for the growth, or camaraderie of model builders. Dont give up!

I actually have a 5 year plan to be able to get my models into Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Reason why I am giving this project 5 years, is because, I need to rebuild my collection. After that, I will be starting with showing off my collection at the local library, then the local SCI-FI conventions, then the local county and state fairs, then finally OMSI.
I was inspired to do with with the LEGO exhibit that was at OMSI last year. I figured if a guy can build a bunch of LEGO models and show it off at OMSI, then I can show off paper models there as well.
