EAA's B-17 "Aluminum Overcast"

She's in Oshkosh, WI for her annual inspection. Most of the year, she's out on tour and giving rides. I've been helping restore the EAA's B-25 (See 1:1 scale B-25 Project) and the B-17 is in the same hangar. I walked through her today and took photos. Some of them are a little fuzzy; I was shooting handheld with my SLR at very slow shutter speeds -- nearly one second at times.

You will notice extra seats in the waist, radio compartment, and cockpit. The top turret remains though the guns and mechanism are gone to make room for passengers. The radioman's dorsal gun is gone. Railings have been added in the bomb bay and a short step ladder in the well under the pilots' seats. Other than that, so far as I can see, her fitting out is authentic WWII.

Aluminum Overcast

Some more photos:
Too bad about the top turret position. I think that would be a fun place to ride and a great spot for photos. But it's just a skylight, too high for any view unless you're 6'7" or taller.

Aluminum Overcast

And more photos:
I wasn't really trying to do a thorough walkaround; there are better sources for that. But if there is a part or component of the airplane you are just dying to see, PM me. I'll see what I can do. I'm there a couple of days a week and I can get into all of the B-17 except the tail.

I got to see Aluminum Overcast during its stop in Conway, AR during Veterans day weekeend.
Saw and heard it flying for several days. Also escorted by a formation of misc stunt planes.

An awe inspiring site. And what a sound!

Thanks, nice photos. It must be nice having direct access to a B-17 like that. I was wondering if “Aluminum Overcast” has the same lights marked by the arrows in the photo below (the B-17G on display at Duxford, England). I’ve seen these lights mounted on other U.S. aircraft but this is the only photo I have found showing them on a B-17. I’ll send you a PM with my email info.

In an earlier article you mentioned seeing something of what the WW2 men had to experience. My dad rode the top turret and several times mentioned hints about how cold it was. Some things are hard to describe.
My uncle rode the B-29, that looks like a Caddy and had radar too.

At 25,000 feet, the temp could drop to -40F. on a good day. With a slipstream of 160-180 mph whipping past the turret, it was probably a little (!!) chilly. The gunners in the waist had the worst of it with those open windows but the whole airplane was drafty, especially when you start adding holes from bullets, cannon shells, and flak. Brrrr!
