The font manager is pretty much like it always was.

My biggest issue will be installing the new version and attempting to import/open older files.

I've had a problem in the past, with some files not opening in a newer version of Corel.
Files are saved to specific versions...you can make a file backwards compatible, but certain features and elements are lost in the process.

For example, my entire set of C130 Hercules templates will not open or import in Corel X6.
They are created in X3 I believe.
When I try to open them, Corel tells me the files are corrupted.

To create a new Herc model, I had to import one of the store C130 model PDFs.
This gave me a workable vector template.
Unfortunately many things were altered, broken, grouped and ungrouped, etc and it was a ton of work creating a new workable template for future C130s.

This time I will not uninstall X6...just install X8 alongside.
And start testing which files will and will not be workable.

No it isn't.
Its a completely new Font Manager.
In older versions of Corel (up to X7) Bitstream Font Navigator was included.

X8 comes with Corel's Font Manager 2017

You are using Coreldraw X7, right?...not Corel Graphics Suite 2017, which comes with Coreldraw X8)

First thing I notice, is you don't have to search for or tell the program to "find" fonts on your system.
The program loads in a millisecond and all your fonts are immediately there.
Everything except the fonts I have stored on another harddrive are there.

And wow, its fast.

Another thing is no fonts are "installed".
They are just there, available to use whenever you want them.

...
As usual, they have messed with the user interfaces.
In X8 Coreldraw, I am already seeing various controls and tools moved to different locations.
This has got to be the most frustrating thing, when you have gotten used to something in a certain place
and now its in a different place.

But I also see some new controls and features, that are very cool.

The fills and interactive fill tool is very new.
Its gonna take some getting used to, but its very very cool.
Looks like they have really improved it.

Even the drop shadow features work much better.

Biggest annoyance so far was that I had to install Internet Explorer 11 before Corel would install.
I don't use IE at all...and I didn't like the Microsoft integration idea.
Oh well.
Bill Gates just paid off Nigeria's $76 million debt...because he can.

You're right Dave, I have X7, when I saw the 2017 in the picture I thought it was the same. Glad to hear they have fixed the font manager, cause it was a mess.

How well does trace work in this one? It has been improving with each iteration, but still leaves something to be desired.

Haven't tried it yet...
but I did see the Live Trace?
Haven't tried that either.
Still getting the basic options and workspace customizations in place first.

There are few tedious things...like the "Arrange" dropdown menu from the top bar is now "Object".
Which is okay, unless you are used to looking for the "Arrange" menu!

And then, if you look for "Group" and "Ungroup"...
well, its not there.

You can find Group, which opens another side menu,
and from there, you can find Group and Ungroup.

LOL
annoyingly pointless in my opinion.
I guess I'll have to start using Ctrl+G...and Ctrl+U

I'll report on the Trace soon.

Follow up...since I just received the second half of my Prize from the Corel art contest.
A new copy of Graphics Suite 2018!

This package of course include CorelDraw 2018 ...is it X9 then?
Must be.
I haven't installed it yet, but i will be soon.

I've only had X8 installed for a couple of months and I am still getting used to it.
But I am starting to experience a few recurring bugs and glitches.
Nothing too serious, but its enough to make me try the newer version.

Why waste any more time adjusting to X8 if its got problems?
I may as well switch up now.

The problems I am experiencing are more odd quirks.
Nothing that has caused me to lose unsaved work.
No corrupted files either.
In fact, the bugs I have experienced have prompted me to save open work...close the program
...re-open and continue working with no losses other than the time wasted doing this.
More frustrating than anything else.

The funny thing about these bugs is, not everyone experiences the same bugs or under the same circumstances.
They are often caused by incompatibilities with other systems and other softwares.
Then, theres file corruptions and changes over time.
Software Updates can also result in installation changes, resulting in varying bugs.
*Updates usually fix actual legitimate errors within the software.

Often reinstalling software repairs certain bugs...and new ones appear! So, you can't always fault the software.

If people are interested, I can detail the problems.

I'll report again when 2018 is installed.
