Allers Familie Journal Ski Doo
Found this on the cover of Allers Familie Journal Vol. 45 No. 4, Jan 27, 1921
Looks like an early Ski Doo.

Doug,
Were there any other drawings of this thing? From an engineering standpoint, it's a nightmare. Some of the rods don't seem to connect to anything and others seem to be connected where they shouldn't. It would be a wonderful thing to model. Maybe someone could modify it for a steampunk machine. John |

I did not see any other diagrams of the contraption in the body of the edition.
Here is the site where I found the copy: https://www.plu.edu/archives/allers-familie-journal/ There are a bunch of editions available to look through. Some of the links seem to be duplicates instead of going to a different edition.

Hi All,
Here is the cover of the April, 1914 Popular Mechanics magazine. I’m including a cut from the article. I won’t copy the full article here, but the magazine can be viewed through Google Books, here: https://books.google.com/books?id=Kt...page&q&f=false Also, the September, 1917 issue of Popular Science shows a similar contraption, available here: https://books.google.com/books?id=gi...page&q&f=false There are other types of this crazy wheelie thing, with some even operating today. The biggest problem with them is “Gerbiling.” That is, slamming on the breaks too hard and spinning around inside the wheel like a gerbil in wheel. Fun Stuff. Score and fold, Thumb Dog |

That September Popular Science one definitely looks steam punkish. The names Rube and Goldberg come to mind when reading the article describing how the thing is supposed to work.
There is a nice illustration of the contraption in the magazine on page 371.

Guys,
Thanks for the links. While looking at the human gerbil machine, I found a truck with folding seats that would carry 38 soldiers and a really neat river revenue cutter. Those old magazines are addictive! Last edited by missileer; 02-23-2018 at 07:07 PM. Reason: mispelling |

What a unique contraption. Wonder how it worked out.
Thepropeller is as unique as the rest of the vehicle. Would make an interesting model, though. JoeG
