Mute sites with autoplay background music

It is annoying to visit a website that starts playing music automatically and there seems to be no way to turn it off.

There is a way.
If you look at the tab above the address bar you will see a speaker icon next to the title of the site. In Firefox you can click on the speaker icon and that will mute the music. In Chrome you right click and choose mute site in the drop down menu.

I just reach for the knob on my keyboard and turn the volume down...?

Nobody embeds music anymore on webpages...its a defunct flash or java thing.
Only old websites and older webdesigners do that. lol
I haven't come across a page like that in a very long time.

You must be visiting the wrong places! LOL

There was a link given to a site with an aircraft model with a note about annoying music. There is at least one other site with paper models that plays music in the background. Those don't seem to be wrong places. lol lol lol

The method mentioned in this thread is page specific. You can always mute or even turn your speakers off. That way you will have no sound on any web page until you unmute or turn the speakers back on.

This is why I only ever have a multi media keyboard.
So I have quick and easily accessible volume control for my sound.

I need it mostly for youtube videos that have terribly inconsistent sound levels
and for those videos that blast you with ridiculous deathmetal or hardstyle soundtracks that never match the topic you are watching.

Not that I don't like deathmetal or hardstyle
...just that I prefer to hear the real sounds especially when watching racecars or jet fighters.

Actually the 'orrible music I mentioned on 4D Model Planes is coming from an autoplay video on the site (There are a few that play one after the other) which also give a spoken commentary about the aircraft. i didn't like the music so (Like Dave) I just hit the keyboard volume control.

As to the speaker symbol on the tab in chrome ... It is there ... showing you which page is playing sound, but right clicking it doesn't kill the music. It just takes you into the site where you can stop the video. So much easier to have volume control available on the keyboard.
