Maritime Model Contest
I just spent two days at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum's annual Model Boat Show and Contest. I displayed three paper models: GPM's Bismarck, Kooklik's U-Boat VII-C, and Maly's Orp Piorun -- the only paper models at the event. I also took along some unbuilt paper model ship kits that were pretty well thumbed by Sunday afternoon.
This was my first time at this show and I did not enter the contest, though there is a "kit-built" category that covers paper models. I met, talked with, and learned from many master ship modelers. I gave away a lot of my "Getting Started in Paper Modeling" flyers. And I received nothing but compliments and appreciation from a group of very serious scale modelers in whose skills I am in awe. Many of the people I talked to over two days had no idea of the variety, realism, and accuracy of paper ship models. To my delight, several of the ship modelers went away saying, "I'll have to try that." One of my goals in showing my models is to win modelers of all stripes "over to the Dark Side." I think I had more success with this small group (about 2 dozen exhibitors) than at any other event. The level of modeling skill on display was truly impressive. I'll post photos to this thread as I get them edited and sorted out. The models aren't paper but they are impressive and inspiring. In the meantime, here are two photos of my exhibit (and one of me looking a little "showed out" on Sunday afternoon). And if you're ever in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum is an absolute must-see. --David

What If? USS Solace
One of the most interesting models, and a prize-winner, was a What-If model of a US Navy hospital ship -- USS Solace -- based on an Essex-Class carrier. The scale is 1/350.
