74th anniversary of D-Day / A-10 Warthog in special livery
74th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy.
A short reminder so that we don't forget that 74 years ago, on evening June 5th , Allies' paratroopers were boarding the C-47 and preparing to jump over Normandy, from midnight, to free Europe. For the airplane fanatics, you might be interested reading this article on an A-10 Warthog exhibiting a special livery, with the black and white invasion stripes, that flew over the Normandy beaches to commemorate the 74th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy. https://theaviationist.com/2018/06/0...ing-to-latvia/

Another important anniversary. Thanks for your remembrance.
Maybe we should make one special thread for historical anniversaries? I think that could be a great idea. We could add there also smaller events from history, write something about them, discuss... This thread would be probably always on the main page.

Howard Newman, one of the agents I assist, was one of those paratroopers. He passed away a couple years back, but he will be missed.

I cannot believe its 74 years now. I was there for the 50th anniversary. Seems like only yesterday I walked the same beaches as those thousands of soldiers did before me.
I got a a very erie feeling when I was there, walking in the same footprints as those who gave all. My only hope is we never forget what they did for us, 74 years later. |

The New World comes to Rescue the Old...
The New World comes to Rescue the Old...
In the predawn light of June 6th the Wermacht love soldiers stationed on the “Atlantic Wall” awoke to strange shadows and muffled sounds far to their west. Soon their world cave in all around them as hundreds of bombers and fighters with strange black & white stripes roared over them. Their glorious Fuhrer had not prepared them for this! As the sun made its trek to the west the rest of the world woke to the glorious news that the long dark days would soon be over. It would take another year before the last Nazi had been chased down. (Some of them dressed in women’s clothes to escape the wrath of the French people) I never built armor or figures but I have seen many splendid models of the equipment and men who slogged their way across Europe that year. Once again this is NOT about the models. It is about the men, women and children who had gazed to west for so many years wondering when the world would come. I have spent time working in Europe not just being an “Ugly American” tourist. I know that some Europeans scoff at America. I hope that some of them remember what this country did for them on that day 74 years ago. If only today’s world could be as united as we were back then.... https://photos.app.goo.gl/nhhys58UH43sJUE53

24 years ago I was sitting off the coast of France, watching the President of the United States cast a wreath into the English Channel in honor of the Fallen on that day. Somehow it seems fitting the ship was the U.S.S. George Washington (CVN-73).
