Took a break from my attempts at coding the walk cycle on an Arduino and got back into a little more familiar area: dressing up the legs to look cooler than they actually are
Made some cardstock and cardboard covers for the base limb of the legs.

Progress! I have a working walk cycle prototype, and I have the inner cardboard frame for the electronics. Not much room in there for the innards. I have fashioned a door to get to the inside of the bot. Here is a video and some pics.

Painting the lower half so I can get the electronics mounted and then work on the outside of the model. A layer of flat black first will give the outer coats of paint a little depth. Next the olive drab, or in this case, flat palm color. I'm thinking of leaving the servos flat black to hide them a bit, and giving more attention to the green parts of the bot and legs.

Now I'm making the shapes for the top half. I had to modify the design a little bit to accommodate the control boards and wires. The turret is wider, and the bottom half is a different shape. Maybe this is TankBot MkII.
😀 Here are pictures of both for comparison.

Added the details and greeblies. Broke out the old airbrush and gave it all an OD finish. Once it dries, I will paint some stencils on it to match the others.
On the software front, I've made some progress and have some new hardware to try out. I burned up one of my Arduino Nanos trying to figure out out how to get voltage to both the servos and the controllers. Oh well, learned what not to do... Lol

that last pic really looks great SC, I thought at first that it was a metal kit of a rc toy. you really are nailing these projects! maybe post a few ''How to paint a paper model'' pics as mine always end up soggy and I really dont know how.
Keep up the great work! |

Merry Christmas, and thanks SA!
I really didn't use any special techniques for painting this project, other than using my airbrush to add the last couple of coats. I started by brush painting the entire model with flat black acrylic craft paints. Nothing special, just regular little craft paints from Walmart. Then I brushed the main bodies with a flat leaf green which is kinda bright. Brush painting these couple of layers brings out some surfaces while allowing crevasses to remain a little darker. Then I sprayed the last two coats a darker flat green. This gives yet another layer of faux detailing in nooks and crannies, and smoothes the surface down as well. When I airbrush these craft acrylics, I cut the paint with about a quarter volume of water and another quarter volume of Floetrol paint leveler/spray prep liquid I bought at Home Depot. This makes these cheaper paints flow through the bairbrush smoothly and the finished coat is smoother and thicker. A quart costs about $6 USD, and it only takes an ounce or two to mix up a small cupfull of paint. Honestly, that's it, no secrets. I also revamped the hardware moving the control board to a hand held controller. Hopefully it will reduce weight and give myself a controller that can hold the battery pack. Here's a video:

Oh heck yeah, I'm still working on this one too. I have all three functional pieces in place, now to get rid of the tether, add a battery pack to the bot. 😀

Now you need to work on Dr. Loveless's (spelling?) mechanical spider on the new Wild Wild West, the one with Will Smith as James West.
